A china pig was a bed heating device rather like a stone jug with a screw-in stopper. It was made from white china clay (wally). Although filled with boiling water, grannies generally knitted thick woolen covers for these so that you didn't burn your feet on it. Thus insulated, and containing more water that the more modern (rubber) hot water bottle, it retained heat all night.

English translation:

It was made out of china and it weighed half a ton
But it will still keep you roasting when a rubber one is done
Just fill (it) with hot water and screw down the lid
And jump into bed with your wee china pig.

Here you go:

When[D]I wis a [D7]wee boy the [G]pleasures I [Em]knew
In [A]content were simple and in number were [D]few
French toast and [D7]square sausage, playin' [G]fitba' and [Em]tig
But the [A]best o' them a' wis ma [A7]wee china [D]pig

Ch:
It's [G]made oot o' wally and it [D]weighs half a ton
It'll [A7]still keep ye warm when a [D]rubber yin's [D7]done
Just [G]fill wi' hot water and [D]screw doon the lid
then [A7]jump intae bed wi' yer wee china [D]pig

Noo the place that we lived in wis and auld single-end
Cauld, damp, dark and draughty it had long been condemned
So tae keep us all healthy here's whit my maw did
She bought all the family a wee china pig

When the temperature fell just as fast as the snaw
And the icy north wind chapped yer knees and nose raw
Under my blankets I'd burrow and dig
Safe, warm and cosy wi'ma wee china pig

Noo I'm a man and I've got me a wife
She's a wee tidy thing she's the pride o' my life
She's no' very smart and she's no' very big
But she sure beats the pants off my wee china pig!

More often called a 'hot water pig' (to distinguish it from other types of pigs or even from other types of china pigs.)

We brought ours back from Scotland but the cat broke it. To my considerable surprise I was able to buy a new one on ebay just a few months ago. Not much needed in Florida but we may go north again.

I'll tell you it was a great thing to have of a cold Scottish night.

One of the few truly BRitish things I didn't sell off when I returned to the states was a 220V GE hair dryer, with the bonnet and long hose connecting the hot air bits with the bonnet.

When I relocated again to the NE of the US, I found that the bonnet end of the hose could be stuck into the bottom of the bed, under the covers, the dryer turned on, and the bed warmed up a treat!

I'm sure GE never intended or even thought that folks might try this, but the difference in output running on 110V insured that the dryer would never overheat and set the bed on fire.

Dave
