I heard it once a long time ago, and I think it was Eric Bogle but I'm not sure..

I don't know were it originaly came from but the notes for the Eric Bogle Songbook he says "When I was a wee boy in Scotland this was one of my mother's favourite sayings. She was full of them unfortunately. I thought it deserved a song."

Ed Trickett once referred to "If Wishes Were Fishes" -- just before singing it in a concert in Washington, DC -- as "a perfect midlife crisis song." He's right.
