Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: khandu Date: 04 Nov 02 - 10:22 PM Hey, hey, hey! Man, what great company you have put me in, Amos! I thank ye severely! (But why in the heck did you have to have Bobert , Tweed and me on the same CD????!!!! This may be a bit much for the average ear to handle!) Anywho, this is supposed to be a lyric and comment thread. So here goes! Comment: "Strange World" is a bewildered song about a bewildered man (ME!) "Emmy" is focus of the bewilderment, but Life is the source of it. All people named in the song are real people. The names have not been changed to protect the innocent...except "Emmy"; hers was changed to protect the guilty! The song ends on a note of hope, yet the last line is left unresolved, even as the story is unresolved. "IT'S A STRANGE WORLD" by khandu Well I think I'm gonna go to Ireland and look for the leprechaun. If I get lucky like Darby O'Gill I'm bound to catch me one I'll tell him that I want my riches And I know what they will be; A little peace of mind and a long long time With Emmy right here by me. Hey, Bo ain't on the scene no more, He left when I was a kid But I still remember the way he was And the funny little things he did. But here I am, and here I'll be Until I say "Here I go!" But before I leave, I do believe There's something you should know It's a strange world...I wanna make that clear. Yeah, it's a strange world But why in the hell are we even here? Now, Emmy'd been married 'bout fourteen times She told me I'd be her last But Emmy ran away to Mexico, She left me in her past. When she left, she left her fingerprints Dabbled all over my brain Now I can't think a thought without thinking of her Or talk without speaking her name. It's a strange world...yeah, that's for sure! It's a strange place...without her Now, Janet was a jewel, Bonnie was a beauty Donna Ray, she was full of spice! Like a good man, I tried to do my duty, Would have gladly done it twice. Some things they say are better left unsaid Some deeds are better left undone But I can't get her sweet lips outta my head That lady was a hellalotta fun. It's a strange world...even way back when Such a strange world...I guess it's always been I think I'll smoke me another pack of Camel I think I'll have another beer Just like the joker, I'm always looking For some kind of way outta here. Maybe I'm right, but maybe I'm wrong Maybe Emmy was a lying whore But I'd glady give up everything I own Just to see her walk through that door It's a strange world, as you can tell. And I'm a stranger in a strange land This place called "Hell". Everybody says time is on my side But there's a monkey on my back Emmy weighs heavy upon my mind Like a train on a railroad track I think I'm gonna go to Ireland, Look for the leprechaun Maybe I'll be lucky like Darby O'Gill.... khandu |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Giac Date: 05 Nov 02 - 03:19 AM Right next to Bobert! At least I'm not numbered with the sane. Jesus In The Clouds is not a religious song, but in a way, it's spiritual. It's about, um, eccentric women who live alone, just a bit off to the side of the road. All the women described are, or were, real. I know them all and I'm in there, too. When it gets really cold, I always hope they have a warm place to stay. The words fell out in rapid order on just such a cold night a few years ago. I'll post the words in a day or two. Thanks, Amos, you're amazing! Mary |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Tweed Date: 05 Nov 02 - 06:51 AM The song I sent in was crafted under great duress and hardship as I haven't sat down to write one for a couple years and Amos was after me for an original and the original "Traditional" submissions turned out to be owned by young entrepreneurs who scarf up all the old blues songs for personal gain. It was recorded while sitting in this very chair using an Elvis mic laid in a cigar box with the lid set precisely at a 45 degree angle to capture the Fender 2x12 Blues Deville amplified tones of my trusty old telecaster. The beautiful vocals have been preserved using a Shure 57 which was carefully taped to a box of Christmas Lites to elevate it closer to my head, since my boom stand has evidently been permanently borrowed. The recording device is a cassette tape deck, whose only redeeming features are two mic inputs instead of the usual none. It also has a Dolby noise reduction button but I don't think it was activated since the song is mostly comprised of noise. As for the song...I've been hanging around the new Chatroom lately and risking life and limb to climb in the cyber jacuzzi with the resident Sirens who make that their lair and used that for inspiration. This one goes out to Mz.Sorchy, Liz, Lyrical Lady, Noreen, catsPHiddle, and all the rest of you luscious babes in the MudCat hot tub. The Moet's on me! "EXHIBIT B" TWEED'S MUDCATWIMMEN BLUES My woman is so mean, she won't talk to me today, My woman is so mean, she won't talk to me today I'll find a Mudcat Woman, Just to while my time away. O...don't you hear her when she moans? O...don't you hear her when she moans? When I'm out on this machine She can't use her telephone. The clock is straight up Midnight, and the bell begins to toll. The clock is straight up Midnight and the bell begins to toll. I sit at this old computer Lookin' for someplace to go. The letters on my keyboard is worn and fadin' fast. The letters on my keyboard is worn and fadin' fast. I strike 'em most ferocious.... I can tap 'em pretty fast. My traffic ain't so heavy, I can't say the reason why. My traffic ain't so heavy, I can't tell the reason why. I think I'll check into the Mudcat, Just to see what I can find. My woman is so mad, she won't talk to me today, My woman is so mad, she won't talk to me today I'll find a Mudcat Woman, Just to while my time away. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: MMario Date: 05 Nov 02 - 10:04 AM THE ANTEDILUVIANS WERE ALL VERY SOBER (Benjamin Franklin - 1745 /trad:tunefile derrydwn) The Antediluvians were all very sober For they had no Wine, and they brew'd no October; All wicked, bad Livers, on Mischief still thinking, For there can't be good Living where there is not good Drinking. Derry down 'Twas honest old Noah first planted the Vine, And mended his Morals by drinking its Wine; He justly the drinking of Water decry'd; For he knew that all Mankind, by drinking it, dy'd. Derry down. From this Piece of History plainly we find That Water's good neither for Body or Mind; That Virtue and Safety in Wine-bibbing's found While all that drink Water deserve to be drown'd. Derry down So For Safety and Honesty put the Glass round. I have no idea whether or not the "Derry Down" I used to sing this is even similar to that which Franklin may have envisaged - but it fit. This was recorded in the sanctuary of a church - an interesting experience in itself! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: khandu Date: 06 Nov 02 - 12:21 AM OH, I must add to the above commentary of "It's a Strange World". Though all instruments are played by me, except the JC Penney electronic drums, the song would have never been recorded without my dearest and bestest friend and fellow musician, David A. He was, and is, my technical man, producer, engineer, etc. He also makes me laugh alot! Some of you argued with him in the "Manatee" thread! So, this song is as much David A., as it is khandu. khandu |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: reggie miles Date: 06 Nov 02 - 02:41 AM This is a song about true love, found. You know, when you find true love it's not something you can easily forget. I remember it vividly, like it was yesturday. I was playing music with this funky jug band at a local watering hole. When I first set foot in the place I was surprised to see, that with just the jukebox cranked up, the dance floor was full of dancers. But, among all the dancers there, she stood out. It was just as though a giant beacon of light was shining on her. I think it might've had something to do with the way she danced. You see, she danced as though she had no internal skeletal stucture. I don't know if you've ever seen this before or not. It's kind of like earthworms....on a hot plate, or a bowl full of jello.... on springs. I couldn't help myself I fell in love and I dubbed her the girl with the shimmy in her pants. I wrote this song about her. Like t' hear it? Here we go. The Cute Little Girl With The Shimmy In Her Pants I know a girl who loves to dance. She likes to shake and shimmy her blouse and pants. Oh how I'd like a chance at love and romance with her. Every night at the cabaret, I watch her swing and sway her blues away, and I pray for the day that can be partners with her. But every boy in town, has the same damn dream as me. How do I stand a chance at love and romance, with the cute little girl with the shimmy in her pants? I've got to make my move, make it quick, before I get the short end of the stick. If I hesitate, I might lose. It's time to shine my dancin' shoes. I know a girl who loves to dance. She likes to shake and shimmy her pots and pans. Oh how I'd like a chance at love and romance with her. Every night at the cabaret, I like to swing and sway my blues away, and I pray for the day that I can be partners with her. But every single male, for miles around, they're all standin' in a big long line. They're beggin' baby please, on bended knees, "Honey won't you be mine?" But all those guys, they're too late. Cuz tonight I pick her up at eight. I got a date, with love and romance, and the cute little girl with the shimmy in her pants. I got a big date, I can't be late, with the cute little girl with the shimmy at eight. Ah, love! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Barbara Shaw Date: 06 Nov 02 - 08:19 AM I'll combine what I said above with the lyrics here, so it's all in one place. For liner notes on "A Waltz For You" performed by Barbara Shaw with ShoreGrass, written by Frank and Barbara Shaw: Frank originally wrote the first verse of this song to Barbara. She collaborated on the second verse by paraphrasing a stanza from Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard." A Waltz For You Barbara & Frank Shaw A waltz for you to listen to The sweetest one I know I want to make your ears feel good Because I love you so And maybe I can make you laugh And maybe tap your toe A waltz for you to listen to The sweetest one I know. Many a gem the oceans bear Of purest ray serene And many a flower will bloom and grow In the desert, sight unseen Some love songs, dear, may go unheard This one will not be so A waltz for you to listen to The sweetest one I know. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Giac Date: 06 Nov 02 - 09:09 AM Good idea Barbara, I'll repeat what I said above. Lyrics follow. Jesus In The Clouds By Giac She saw Jesus in some clouds in Oklahoma, And Elvis crossing Texas on a train. She sees her Mama's face in every flower. She keeps her fingers crossed and prays for rain. Chorus The voices, she says, are all around us, It won't be long til Mama calls us home. Daddy, he won't care if you come with me, But I'll ask him, if you want, next time he phones. She picks up strays like goats and dogs and kittens, Who go with her across the country wide, In a wagon pulled by two old bay mares, But they always make it home by wintertime. When she was young, she heard of Ferlinghetti, With his junked out men and naked horseback queens. She saw him and Rexroth in some cellar, And it led her stifled mind to Manisfree. Chorus She has a cabin down along the river, And says a spaceship landed in her yard. Aliens talk to her in the popcorn, They tell her why her years go by so hard. She has her pride and won't accept a favor, Or she lives on welfare, barely getting by, But she's got a thousand stashed out in the henhouse, To bury her real nice … when she dies. Chorus (guitar through verse and chorus, then…) She saw Jesus in some clouds in Oklahoma (guitar) She sees her Mama's face in every flower … (fade) |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: greg stephens Date: 06 Nov 02 - 11:45 AM Well I see I've ended up in splendid company. Information: Robinson's Reel, The Honeymoon, A Bonny Lass to Mrry Me, and the Cumberland Reel all come from the MS notebooks of Cumbrian fiddlers of the 19th century. Cumbria is the top left-hand corner of England, containing the old counties of Cumberland, Westmoreland and the Furness part of Lancashire. The Lake District is part of the county, which contains England's highest mountain (Scafell Pike), deepest lake (Wastwater) and greatest liar (used to be Will Rotson, but now he's dead they choose a new one every year. Cumbria/Cumberland means land of the Britons(or Celts or Welsh or whatever), they hung on longer in Cornwall and Cumbria than in the rest of England. Then the Vikings arrived and took over, which explains why we have so many Norse-derived placenames and dialect words. Cumbria is very rural and historically remote from English life, and there was little to do there in the winter but play the fiddle or socialise with sheep. The track is from the Boat Band CD "A Trip to the Lakes": actually I am the only person playing on this track,multi-tracked tenor banjo and guitar. I chose this one as it's a Mudcat CD so I thought the one with only me on it was appropriate. Other tracks with the other wonderful members of the Boat Band are much better, but they aren't Mudcatters. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: khandu Date: 06 Nov 02 - 10:51 PM There are some fine lyrics on "PLUM"! Barbara and Reggie great writing! And , Giac, I loved the lyrics! Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Mudlark Date: 07 Nov 02 - 12:36 AM I first heard Wait Till the Clouds Roll By sung by Cathy Barton and Dave Para in a tiny coffee house in San Luis Obispo, CA, a long way from their home. I fell in love with the lilting melody and the inherent simplicity and innocence of the lyrics. It was written in 1884, music by H.J. Fulmer, lyrics by J.T. Wood. The last verse was added by Bob Coltman. Jenny, my own true loved one I'm going far away Out on the bounding billows Out on the deep blue sea. How I will miss you my darling There where the storms rage on high Cheer up and don't be lonely Wait till the clouds roll by Chorus: Wait till the clouds roll by, Jenny Wait till the clouds roll by Jenny, my own true loved one Wait till the clouds roll by And, Jenny, when far from thee, love I'm on the ocean deep, Each thought of thee forever Loving, sweet vigil keep Then I will come to you my darling Take courage, dear, never cry Cheer up and don't be lonely Wait till the clouds roll by Chorus And Jenny, a star's above you Shines in your cabin door Sparkles to say I love you Afar where the billows blow My arms enfold you, my darling Never you pine, dear, or cry Cheer up and dont be lonely Wait till the clouds roll by Chorus |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: reggie miles Date: 07 Nov 02 - 02:42 AM khandu, you're two kinds. I should add to my previous post about the song that The Cute Little Girl With The Shimmy In Her Pants is from a cd called Reggie Miles With Ham Gravy/At The Crossroads. The collection of songs were gleaned from a live performance featuring Jack Cook on electric and resophonic guitars and Hugh Sutton on accordions and piano backing me whilst I sing and play a few on my razor sharp handtool (my musical saw), my Nobro (my homemade resophonic bottleneck slide guitar) and my venerable flat top six string. Two others feature me backing Jack with my 1929 Maytag Custom Dixie Delta Deluxe Eldorado Rhythm Board (my washboard/sound effects gizmo), harmonica and vocal harmonies. The afore mentioned number is me on my flat top, Jack with his resophonic and Hugh with his accordion. |

"Arthur and Sally" In the backwoods of Spotsylvania A grave site can be found Rustin' iron gate and two carved stones Read "Arthur and Sally Brown" Chorus: Now, Arthur and Sally Back in the pines Share croppin' teneats With dreams on their mins Now, We ain't talkin' no trips to China No mansion on the hill Just forty acres of Virgina soil And a little corn liquer still Yeah, the corn grew full and oh so tall And the wood did Arthur split But not outside the kitchen But down by the crick With the crops all in He'd be back in the woods Smoke snakin' thru the oak Brewin' shine that'd find it's time On tables of city folk Chorus Now they're liein' over on yonder ridge Been there since '33 And since... there ain't been no shine so fine in this old county Yeah, they're liein' over on yonder ridge Been there since '33 And since... there ain't been no shine so fine In Spotsylvanee Yeah, this old county Chorus The song is based on a real cemetary that I indeed found back in the woods in Spotslyvania County and my son, Ben, and I are the only folks that I know of who can find it. I go once a year, take a rake, lopping sheres and a saw and clean it up. It kills off an entire day since its a 2 hour drive down there and another hour walk thru some of the thickest woods. Bobert |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: khandu Date: 07 Nov 02 - 05:12 PM Thanks, Bobert! Authur and Sally would be proud! Not only for the song, but for the cemetary service you perform! I look with grand anticipation at hearing the song...and all the others on Plum Nutz! khandu |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Amos Date: 07 Nov 02 - 07:10 PM Bobert, that story is worth the whole thing. Dang!! Thanks!! A |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Big Mick Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:45 AM Great story, Bobert! I have one very similar. One day, while driving in a remote area of the state game area, I notice a cutout in the woods. It was all overgrown, but I checked it out. I found 4 grave stones. They were Catholic, a Mr. and Mrs. Duffy and what I assume were two daughters. The girls died within a very short time of each other, and I assume that was due to some affliction of the day. Mom died a short time later, within a few years. Dad died 10 years after the girls. I wondered why they were all by there lonesome out in this remote area. The deaths occurred in the late 1800's and I can only assume, based on a cemetary being only a few miles away, that because of being Irish Catholics, they weren't allowed in that plot. In checking old maps, I found the site listed as a "Jesuit cemetary". I stop in every so often, sit with them, play them some tunes on the Low D, or practice my Uilleann pipes with them. Sometimes I read from "1000 Years of Irish Poetry" to them, or talk to them about the North of Ireland and where it is at. Another member of my parish sprung for a new fence, and we try to spruce the place up every so often. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Bobert Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:43 PM Hey, Mick. Can relate. Something about showin' reverence to unknowns who have come before to humble us, bring us to our knees with respect and leave us better folks for the experience. You know what I mean... Bobert |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: khandu Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:55 PM Bobert and Mick, we have more in common than I imagined! There's an old cemetary on my Grandad's old home place. Most of the inhabitants died in the 1850-60's. Many of the stones were uprooted and fallen, themselves being buried under years of leaves. I have spent many a day there poking in the ground with a knife to find the stones, and resurrecting them. It was a peaceful place, way out in the woods, far from the living. Many a tune from my guitar has been played there to honor those whose bodies lay beneath the earth, whose spirits surrounded me and sang along with the music. BTW, the Plum thread has more posts than any of the others!!! Nya nee nya nee nya nya! k |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: greg stephens Date: 09 Nov 02 - 01:21 PM My Oxford dictionary says, under "plum": 3: good thing, best in collection, prize in life. If that's what it says in the dictionary, who the hell are we to quibble? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: harpmaker Date: 11 Nov 02 - 06:43 PM Yes indeed, Roseville fair-Bill Staines. We live in Yorkshire (UK) and we have a place called 'Rosedale' in the North yorkshire moors national park, it has a lovley abbey etc. It also has a fair- so its just how we sing it! Rosedale fair. Credit to Bill though. Harpy. (do you know the cheeky begers in the chat room call me 'harpy', well I suppose it could be worse!) PS, Amos, well done, we will be comming over to have a go on your steam ship one of these days! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Sorcha Date: 11 Nov 02 - 07:08 PM Yea, well, harpmaker, we are still waiting for permission from Bill. I couldn't find "Rosedale Fair" and told Amos all I could find was Roseville....was it same? He said "no", so we may end up having to cut it because of inaccurate info........ |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Tweed Date: 11 Nov 02 - 07:26 PM Well Sorchy, it's not listed in BMI. I'd almost say that it was fair game. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Amos Date: 11 Nov 02 - 08:33 PM Nudge Musicman!! Call Bill!! It is one of the nicest tunes on there, man!!' A |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Musicman Date: 13 Nov 02 - 12:11 AM the song is definately Roseville Fair, words/music copyright Bill Staines... 1979 i'm sure he would agree to it being included on the cd... he is on tour at the moment so may be unable to respond to emails/phone calls.... but i am hoping to hear from him soon..... musicman.. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Amos Date: 13 Nov 02 - 12:57 AM Thanks, Paul!! We'll risk going ahead while you and Sorch are awaiting his answer. No-one disagrees that it is Bill's song -- the changed name fooled me into thinking it was a different song, but it was local color, is all. I think it is what we call in my business a low-probability risk. A |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Callie Date: 26 Nov 02 - 07:47 AM We're very excited that one of our tracks has been chosen for Plum. Thanks so much. Your choice is a little surprising - it's one of our "early" songs in old French, but you're very welcome to it! We'd be grateful if you could attribute the song to Sermisy. And here are a few words about the song: This French chanson was first published in 1528. Written by Sermisy for voices and lute, it is somewhat of an oddity for its time because this time the guy gets the girl (no unrequited love here!). Not only that, he sings about what a fantastic figure she has. The song is performed by Touchwood - Kate Andrews (Chicky), Christina Mimmocchi (Callie) and Terry Clinton who sings and plays vihuela (Spanish Renaissance guitar). www.touchwoodweb.com |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: reggie miles Date: 27 Nov 02 - 12:24 PM Amos, I don't mean to rehash what's already been covered here but I asked a question that did not get answered or maybe it did and I missed where the answer is. So if you don't mind, can you tell me if there is an exact description of what the liner looks like on the cds and by that I mean a picture or reproduction somewhere of just what is included in the 'finished product'? I know that everyone has included notes here in these individual threads about their recordings but what I'd like to know is just what part of that got included on the actual liner. Has someone posted a visual of the graphics with the details of the notes on the liner? I mean can we view what Michael produced? You know kind of like I get if I'm going to buy a cd online elsewhere. Has anyone even thought to do this? Is Dick handling that part of the project since sales are happening via his site? Okay, I know, that's several questions but they're all dealing with the same thing. I'm just kind of surprised that we have not been able to see a visual of the project. I can understand the difficulties of perhaps posting audio teasers or shortened clips of some of the songs on the set but it shouldn't be that complicated for someone to provide a little something to look at. This is starting to sound like a complaint and I don't mean it to sound that way. I'm just curious and I think it would help others who may be curious about this project as well. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Sorcha Date: 27 Nov 02 - 12:30 PM There is somewhere, let me see if I can find it...... |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Amos Date: 27 Nov 02 - 12:57 PM Reggie: The artwork files Sorcha linked to do not show exactly how things are listed, they were a rough concept that Homeless included in his prototype. We eused his artwork for the cover but MichaelR would have to tell you exactly how listings were written, unless you wait until your copy arrives which should be soon!! (Of course you have ordered a set, right?) I'd suggest PMing Michael if you need to see the final listing copy -- he could email it to you. A |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: reggie miles Date: 27 Nov 02 - 01:50 PM So you mean no one has actually placed the finished product info I'm looking for online for everyone to see? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: Spartacus Date: 27 Nov 02 - 02:38 PM Amos, I know this is going to be one of those overly-repetative questions, but how do I order the cd's? I have been out of the loop, and I searched a little, but i'm not too bright. Can you leave a link? THanks, -Spartacus |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Plum From: michaelr Date: 27 Nov 02 - 02:44 PM Reggie -- space on the CD inserts being very limited, the track info looks pretty much like what I posted at the top of this thread, with certain additions and corrections. The inserts also include a brief essay from Amos about Mudcat and this project, and a briefer one from Dick Greenhaus about the DT. I'm sure there is a way to post previews of the covers on Mudcat's picture pages, but I don't know how that's done. Cheers, Michael |
