Comment: "Strange World" is a bewildered song about a bewildered man (ME!) "Emmy" is focus of the bewilderment, but Life is the source of it. All people named in the song are real people. The names have not been changed to protect the innocent...except "Emmy"; hers was changed to protect the guilty!

The song ends on a note of hope, yet the last line is left unresolved, even as the story is unresolved.

All the women described are, or were, real. I know them all and I'm in there, too. When it gets really cold, I always hope they have a warm place to stay. The words fell out in rapid order on just such a cold night a few years ago.

The song I sent in was crafted under great duress and hardship as I haven't sat down to write one for a couple years and Amos was after me for an original and the original "Traditional" submissions turned out to be owned by young entrepreneurs who scarf up all the old blues songs for personal gain.

It was recorded while sitting in this very chair using an Elvis mic laid in a cigar box with the lid set precisely at a 45 degree angle to capture the Fender 2x12 Blues Deville amplified tones of my trusty old telecaster. The beautiful vocals have been preserved using a Shure 57 which was carefully taped to a box of Christmas Lites to elevate it closer to my head, since my boom stand has evidently been permanently borrowed. The recording device is a cassette tape deck, whose only redeeming features are two mic inputs instead of the usual none. It also has a Dolby noise reduction button but I don't think it was activated since the song is mostly comprised of noise.

As for the song...I've been hanging around the new Chatroom lately and risking life and limb to climb in the cyber jacuzzi with the resident Sirens who make that their lair and used that for inspiration. This one goes out to Mz.Sorchy, Liz, Lyrical Lady, Noreen, catsPHiddle, and all the rest of you luscious babes in the MudCat hot tub. The Moet's on me!

This is a song about true love, found. You know, when you find true love it's not something you can easily forget. I remember it vividly, like it was yesturday. I was playing music with this funky jug band at a local watering hole. When I first set foot in the place I was surprised to see, that with just the jukebox cranked up, the dance floor was full of dancers. But, among all the dancers there, she stood out. It was just as though a giant beacon of light was shining on her. I think it might've had something to do with the way she danced. You see, she danced as though she had no internal skeletal stucture. Well I see I've ended up in splendid company.
Information:
Robinson's Reel, The Honeymoon, A Bonny Lass to Mrry Me, and the Cumberland Reel all come from the MS notebooks of Cumbrian fiddlers of the 19th century. Cumbria is the top left-hand corner of England, containing the old counties of Cumberland, Westmoreland and the Furness part of Lancashire. The Lake District is part of the county, which contains England's highest mountain (Scafell Pike), deepest lake (Wastwater) and greatest liar (used to be Will Rotson, but now he's dead they choose a new one every year. Cumbria/Cumberland means land of the Britons(or Celts or Welsh or whatever), they hung on longer in Cornwall and Cumbria than in the rest of England.Then the Vikings arrived and took over, which explains why we have so many Norse-derived placenames and dialect words. Cumbria is very rural and historically remote from English life, and there was little to do there in the winter but play the fiddle or socialise with sheep.
   The track is from the Boat Band CD "A Trip to the Lakes": actually I am the only person playing on this track,multi-tracked tenor banjo and guitar. I chose this one as it's a Mudcat CD so I thought the one with only me on it was appropriate. Other tracks with the other wonderful members of the Boat Band are much better, but they aren't Mudcatters.

I first heard Wait Till the Clouds Roll By sung by Cathy Barton and Dave Para in a tiny coffee house in San Luis Obispo, CA, a long way from their home. I fell in love with the lilting melody and the inherent simplicity and innocence of the lyrics. It was written in 1884, music by H.J. Fulmer, lyrics by J.T. Wood. The last verse was added by Bob Coltman.

I should add to my previous post about the song that The Cute Little Girl With The Shimmy In Her Pants is from a cd called Reggie Miles With Ham Gravy/At The Crossroads. The collection of songs were gleaned from a live performance featuring Jack Cook on electric and resophonic guitars and Hugh Sutton on accordions and piano backing me whilst I sing and play a few on my razor sharp handtool (my musical saw), my Nobro (my homemade resophonic bottleneck slide guitar) and my venerable flat top six string. Two others feature me backing Jack with my 1929 Maytag Custom Dixie Delta Deluxe Eldorado Rhythm Board (my washboard/sound effects gizmo), harmonica and vocal harmonies. The afore mentioned number is me on my flat top, Jack with his resophonic and Hugh with his accordion.

Our version of "Follow Me Up To Carlow" uses "The Swallowtail" for the instrumental breaks between the verses and to end the song. It is an interesting mix. Tom Verlin plays the mando breaks in the song.

The song is based on a real cemetary that I indeed found back in the woods in Spotslyvania County and my son, Ben, and I are the only folks that I know of who can find it. I go once a year, take a rake, lopping sheres and a saw and clean it up. It kills off an entire day since its a 2 hour drive down there and another hour walk thru some of the thickest woods.

Great story, Bobert! I have one very similar. One day, while driving in a remote area of the state game area, I notice a cutout in the woods. It was all overgrown, but I checked it out. I found 4 grave stones. They were Catholic, a Mr. and Mrs. Duffy and what I assume were two daughters. The girls died within a very short time of each other, and I assume that was due to some affliction of the day. Mom died a short time later, within a few years. Dad died 10 years after the girls. I wondered why they were all by there lonesome out in this remote area. The deaths occurred in the late 1800's and I can only assume, based on a cemetary being only a few miles away, that because of being Irish Catholics, they weren't allowed in that plot. In checking old maps, I found the site listed as a "Jesuit cemetary". I stop in every so often, sit with them, play them some tunes on the Low D, or practice my Uilleann pipes with them. Sometimes I read from "1000 Years of Irish Poetry" to them, or talk to them about the North of Ireland and where it is at. Another member of my parish sprung for a new fence, and we try to spruce the place up every so often.

Bobert and Mick, we have more in common than I imagined!

There's an old cemetary on my Grandad's old home place. Most of the inhabitants died in the 1850-60's. Many of the stones were uprooted and fallen, themselves being buried under years of leaves. I have spent many a day there poking in the ground with a knife to find the stones, and resurrecting them.

It was a peaceful place, way out in the woods, far from the living. Many a tune from my guitar has been played there to honor those whose bodies lay beneath the earth, whose spirits surrounded me and sang along with the music.

BTW, the Plum thread has more posts than any of the others!!! Nya nee nya nee nya nya!

Amos, I don't mean to rehash what's already been covered here but I asked a question that did not get answered or maybe it did and I missed where the answer is. So if you don't mind, can you tell me if there is an exact description of what the liner looks like on the cds and by that I mean a picture or reproduction somewhere of just what is included in the 'finished product'? I know that everyone has included notes here in these individual threads about their recordings but what I'd like to know is just what part of that got included on the actual liner. Has someone posted a visual of the graphics with the details of the notes on the liner? I mean can we view what Michael produced? You know kind of like I get if I'm going to buy a cd online elsewhere. Has anyone even thought to do this? Is Dick handling that part of the project since sales are happening via his site? Okay, I know, that's several questions but they're all dealing with the same thing. I'm just kind of surprised that we have not been able to see a visual of the project. I can understand the difficulties of perhaps posting audio teasers or shortened clips of some of the songs on the set but it shouldn't be that complicated for someone to provide a little something to look at. This is starting to sound like a complaint and I don't mean it to sound that way. I'm just curious and I think it would help others who may be curious about this project as well.

The artwork files Sorcha linked to do not show exactly how things are listed, they were a rough concept that Homeless included in his prototype. We eused his artwork for the cover but MichaelR would have to tell you exactly how listings were written, unless you wait until your copy arrives which should be soon!! (Of course you have ordered a set, right?)

I'd suggest PMing Michael if you need to see the final listing copy -- he could email it to you.

Reggie -- space on the CD inserts being very limited, the track info
looks pretty much like what I posted at the top of this thread, with certain additions and corrections.

The inserts also include a brief essay from Amos about Mudcat and this project, and a briefer one from Dick Greenhaus about the DT.

I'm sure there is a way to post previews of the covers on Mudcat's picture pages, but I don't know how that's done.
