The origin of the words is lost in tradition. About a guy in the depression who was able to put food on the table, but didn't have to like it. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Barbara Shaw Date: 04 Nov 02 - 04:46 PM For liner notes on "Old Man at the Mill" performed by Barbara Shaw with ShoreGrass: Bluegrassers know this as an old Dillard's tune from the 60's, and folkies know it as "The Jolly Miller." It was first published in 1883 as a party dance, although no one seems to know the dance anymore! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Midchuck Date: 04 Nov 02 - 05:53 PM This is great...but... It isn't me. It's Woodchucks' Revenge, which is three of us - two 'Catters and the spouse of one of them; and it's the spouse singing the lead. And the song was written by our daughter. So it shouldn't be my name on it. How do I fix the billing? P. Peter and Amos, I changed the billing in the thread post on several. Post here if that is problematic. One of the Mudelfs. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Amos Date: 04 Nov 02 - 07:09 PM Peter: Terribly sorry - I used your name as the contributor. We can list it however you prefer -- your name witht he group's name,. or all three Catters' names and separate credit for the authorship, or anything else, as you prefer. Let me know by PM how you would prefer it, or just post it on the Mudcat CD XI: High Rising Noon thread which is sort of the catchall thread for issues. OK? Thanks, A |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Paul G. Date: 04 Nov 02 - 09:57 PM The Creek is a song I wrote to honor the lives of 2 very important women in Florida literary history --Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling and many short stories which were sketches of Florida Cracker life -- and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, chronicler and protectorr of the Everglades, author of "River of Grass". It was selected Best New Florida Song in 1999 by the Will McLean Foundation, used for soundtrack in an Australian film, selected for a Florida Songwriter's Sampler CD, and featured on The History Channel UK web site. But mot importantly, it features the flute playing of my wonderful wife, (along with the rest of my band, The Ashley Gang)...Looks like I'm in great company! Thanks Amos. pg |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Barbara Shaw Date: 06 Nov 02 - 02:11 PM To keep everything in one place, I'll repeat here what I said above for liner notes on "Old Man at the Mill" performed by Barbara Shaw with ShoreGrass: Bluegrassers know this as an old Dillard's tune from the 60's, and folkies know it as "The Jolly Miller." It was first published in 1883 as a party dance, although no one seems to know the dance anymore! Old Man at the Mill Traditional, 1883 (Chorus) Same old man livin' at the mill The mill turns around of it's own free will Hand in the hopper and the other in the sack Ladies step forward and the gents fall back. Down sat an owl with his head all white Lonesome day and a lonesome night Thought I heard a pretty girl say Court all night and you sleep next day. Well then said the raven as she flew If I was a young one I'd get two One for to get and the other to sew I'd have a string for my bow, bow, bow. Well my old man's in Kalamazoo He don't wear no yes I do First to the left and then to the right This old mill grinds day and night. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Jeri Date: 06 Nov 02 - 03:43 PM And if anyone wants the words and notes to "Why We Sing," I, who am easily confused, put them in the wrong color thread. They're over yonder in the violets. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Amos Date: 06 Nov 02 - 04:08 PM Why We Sing © 2001 Jeri Corlew Vocals by me, all unaccompaniment by me, recording engineer: that's my fault too, and... Inspiration: Big Mick and the Why We Sing threads. Despair is in our cities and the squalor in the street Where the grandest dream a soul can have is to find enough to eat And most of us just walk on past and do not meet their eyes For a soul just like ours looking back, we'd be hurt to recognise There are stories in the city, there are stories everywhere And children suffer horrors from a world that doesn't care And you'd think their hope would waste away, for who could stand the pain And you'd think they're just like all the rest, and you'd better think again For there are souls behind those wizened eyes that have seen the worst of man And something keeps them going on and giving what they can Each phoenix spirit waits for passion's fire to give it wing To find a reason to rise up, and it's why we sing When we sing a spark within us wakes and is fanned into a flame To those who hear our spirit's voice, it calls in them the same And soon that light within us grows and wells up like a spring And it fills the barren emptiness, and it's why we sing. Though our hearts, they may be jaded, we still listen for that call When we find a spark in one soul, we can see it in them all And whether it's a greater power or a simple human thing It calls out to the best in us and it's why we sing |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 08 Nov 02 - 04:01 PM Addendum to the notes I put in above about Beans, Bacon & Gravy. Number one, the words are in the DT. Number two, I suppose it's obvious (but I'll say it anyway) that the banjo playing and the singing are by yours truly. Dave Oestgerreich |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Night Owl Date: 09 Nov 02 - 12:06 AM I sure hope Alison, Alan, Amos and Paul review the following and correct/edit/add/delete etc. THANK you guys for doing it AND a thanks to all the other unmentioned Mudcatters who helped! I'm assuming Henry Thomas wrote "Fishin' Blues"...anyone know for sure?? "Maxie's Mudcat Blues" was conceived in the HearMe (old PalTalk) song swap room Mudcatters had on the internet. It continues to amaze most of us, that we can hear acoustic musicians from around the globe, taking turns sharing their tunes...one at a time...live. We thought how much fun it would be, if we had the technology, to sing the same song, somehow, at the same time and give it to Max as a "thank-you for Mudcats" present. There were many Mudcatters from around the globe who wanted to participate (initially from 15 different countries), but a combination of life, logistical and computor problems prevented it. Our final result was given to Max during his Birthday Radio Show in 2001. The tune we used is "Fishin Blues" made popular by Taj Mahal. (A search in our database shows the song also recorded by Henry Thomas in 1928.)
Paul did the HARD work, which included recording a master track on guitar to set the rythym, and then mixing the sound files together when he received them.

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Amos Date: 09 Nov 02 - 09:41 AM It was Big Mick's writing that lies behind the inclusion of another song on this CD -- "The Parting Glass". He sang it to a dear friend in the hospital, who passed on. It was perhaps the last communication he and Mick shared before his dying. The poignancy and compassion that comes through in Mick's story compelled me to insist he include this rendition of The Parting Glass in the songs he sent in for the CD. I was adamant, and as usual, Big Mick came through. The Parting GlassTradional Oh, all the money e'er I had, I spent it in good company. And all the harm that ever I've done, Alas it was to none but me. And all I've done for want of wit To mem'ry now I can't recall; So fill to me the parting glass, Good night and joy be with you all. If I had money enough to spend, And leisure time to sit awhile. There is a fair maid in this town, That sorely has my heart beguiled. Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips, I own, she has my heart in thrall; Then fill to me the parting glass, Good night and joy be with you all. Oh, all the comrades e'er I had, They're sorry for my going away. And all the sweethearts e'er I had, They'd wished me one more day to stay. But since it falls unto my lot, That I should rise and you should not, I gently rise and softly call, Goodnight and joy be with you all. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Orchid From: Willa Date: 09 Nov 02 - 03:54 PM It is trad, Amos. this from Contemplator : William Cole lists this as an Irish song. It was well known in both Ireland and Scotland. Before Auld Lange Syne, this song was the most popular parting song in Scotland. It appears in Herd's Scots Songs and in the Scots Musical Museum (1803/4). It was printed on broadsides as early as 1770* and saw a resurgence of popularity in the late 1800s. Several copies of these broadsides can be found at the Bodleian Library. The tune appears as early as the 1600s - in the Skene Manuscript and in the Guthrie Manuscript (c 1675). It is also in Playford's Original Scots Tunes (1700).** The song is also known as Good Night and Joy Be With You All. Sam Henry collected The Parting Glass in Ireland in 1938. In Folksongs of Britain and Ireland, Peter Kennedy relates it to the Manx song Te Traa Goll Thie (It's Time to Go Home). |
