Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Chris Amos Date: 09 Nov 02 - 12:15 PM Bold Carter (Trad arranged Anahata & Amos) This song was collected by Vaughn Williams from Mr Whitby, the Sexton ofTilney-All-Saints near Kings Lynn Norfolk. It is a variant of Polly on the Shore and various versions have been collected around England and Ireland. They have all evolved from a song published in Ireland in 1744 in the Irish Boys Garland. Chris Amos: Guitar & Vocals Anahata: Anglo Concertina Come all you wild young men, And a warning take by me Never you lead your life astray Unto bad company. Bold Carter is my name, And hard is my intent; Till I got pressed by a press merchant, And on board a man of war got sent. We'd not been sailing long, 'fore the first thing that we spied, It was five French men came sailing to down, And at length they were going to draw nigh. We hoisted our main colours, Our bloody bloody flag we let fly, Let every man stand to his gun, For the Lord knows the day we must die. Our captain got wounded most wonderfully sore, And so did most of his men; Our main mast rigging got all shot away, So at length we were forced to give in. Our decks were all splattered with blood, So loud did the great guns roar; I wished myself back home again With my Polly that I left upon the shore. She's a tall and a handsome girl, She's a dark and a rolling eye; And here upon the deck where I lay shot, For her sweet sake I must die. Here's adieu to my father and mother, And my friends and relations, too, I never would have crossed the salt seas so wide If I had been ruled by you. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: GUEST,Mary Humphreys Date: 11 Nov 02 - 08:19 AM Track Number 20 YOUNG REDIN Mary Humphreys and Anahata This is a reconstruction of a traditional ballad found in England, Scotland and the USA. I compiled the lyrics using F J Child's ballad collection and composed the tune myself, using as a model a version found in the Appalachians by Cecil Sharp in the early 1900s. The song details an incident of trial by fire, which was a mediaeval means of testing for guilt. It also has some events based on mediaeval superstition - such as the murdered corpse spurting forth blood when the murderer approaches. The whole story turns on a bad joke made by Young Redin ( some versions call him Young Hunting)where he tells his mistress that he will not spend the night with her because there is another lady waiting down the road for him who is much more attractive! Then he goes and eats the dinner she has cooked for him & drinks the wine she has poured for him. I think he deserves everything that happens later! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Musicman Date: 13 Nov 02 - 12:45 AM ok Amos.... here goes.... Blue-Eyed Mountain Maid Words/Music.. Bill STaines Walking down the road, the autumn rain is falling driving hard and cold against his hair. The trees have lost their leaves, the wild birds are calling Winging on their way to anywhere. Chorus: He remembers how her golden hair did flow, He remembers how the summer wind did blow In the morning when he sat within the shade All alone with the blue-eyed mountain maid. Beneath the summer skies, the fields were green and growing, The purple flowers were blooming in the glade. "As long as these remain, mylove for you in growing." This promise he gave to the mountain maid Chorus: He remembers........ But promises undone can pave the way to sorrow, And words alone can't make the flowers grow; What looks like love today may have another face tomorrow; As quickly as it comes, you watch it go. Chorus: And now he wanders lost and all alone Beneath the mountain trails he used to roam A fool in the foolish game he played For the love of a blue-eyed mountain maid. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: karen k Date: 16 Nov 02 - 10:59 PM THIS TIME AGAIN - Anne Gregson, Bradford-on-Avon, England Cho: This time again, this time again We'll not see this time again. 2x In all the world there'll never be Such a time as this again. For who can tell what will befall Before we meet again. There will be changes to our lives Maybe sorrows and maybe joys. And many bridges to be crossed Before we meet again. I'll see your likeness everywhere In the face of every friend. I'll hear your voice in quiet lands Until we meet again. From the injustice all around And the sorrows and the pain. I pray a better time will come Before we meet again. So take good care in all you do And keep your spirits high. My thoughts will always be with you Until we meet again. I've left this one out but since Anne wrote it I'll put it in here: Now I can see the way ahead And the road that I must tread I shall not wander from my path Until we meet again. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: ConcertinaChap Date: 20 Nov 02 - 08:12 AM We have a real interest in where our songs end up (and take great pleasure in people picking them up). If anyone wants to sing This Time Again, perhaps you could drop us a line? Just for the interest. Cheers, Chris Timson |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Genie Date: 20 Nov 02 - 11:58 AM Chris, I imagine most of us feel similarly. Not talking about royalties, of course, if folks aren't using the songs commercially, but it would be great to know where our songs are being sung and by whom. Emails or PMs about it would be great! Which brings me to a point of dismay that I suddenly realized. When I gave Amos the original liner notes for my CD, from which the "One, Out Of Many" song was taken, I included my full name and copyright dates on all my songs. I don't know how I missed this, but on the Mudcat CD, it just says "Genie" (a name I never used before Mudcat and by which hardly any non'Catters know me) with the song being credited to "J. Pratt." This means if the CD ends up in the hands of someone outside mudcat who knows me, they'll have no idea that I'm the singer or the songwriter! I think I let it slip initially because I thought we were SUPPOSED TO use our Mudcat names. Since I have not seen the liner notes, I'm not sure if they will remedy that problem. (But liner notes don't always get read, either.) Oh, well. If there's a second run of these CD's, can my name on the CD be changed to "Genie (Jeanene Pratt")? Genie |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Amos Date: 20 Nov 02 - 04:35 PM Aw, Genie -- I'm sorry that slipped through. THe intial guideline was using Mudcat names except as otherwise requested. Then we started promoting for people to specify what they wanted on the inserts, to try and accomodate all the individual preferences. A |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Genie Date: 20 Nov 02 - 08:35 PM Well, Amos, it's largely my fault. It just didn't register until today that it would just say "Genie" on the label. But is there a possiblility of addressing any errors or amendments to the label if and when a second batch is run off? Genie |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Amos Date: 20 Nov 02 - 08:43 PM G: I dunno -- it's between Dick Greenhaus and the company that does repro for him, and of course MichaelR who would have to update the master file. A |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Genie Date: 20 Nov 02 - 11:09 PM Well, let's see how many other corrections people want to make. Wouldn't be worth it for just one or two (if making the correction takes a lot of time or bother). On the other hand, if you decide to finish out the spectrum later and put me on another CD, I can identify myself properly on that one, and people who have the whole set can figure it out. (Meanwhile, you deserve a rest.) Genie |
Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Genie Date: 21 Nov 02 - 11:47 AM Whew! Checked my sent PMs and it seems I gave michaelr, to include after "Genie"), one of my email addresses that uses my real name! Problem solved, and I'm much relieved! Genie |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Genie Date: 30 Dec 02 - 08:19 AM Hey, Strawberry folks! I just volunteered to clean up and format the liner notes to post for the Strawberry CD, so people can copy and print them. If there's any more info you'd like included, please post it post haste, along with any lyrics you'd like included. Even if your song is "trad," it would be nice to have the lyrics of the version you did to include in the notes. Thanks, Genie |

Subject: RE: Mudcat CD Series: Strawberry From: Genie Date: 30 Dec 02 - 03:51 PM Keep those additions and corrections coming, folks -- either here or in a PM to me. I just posted a cleaned-up and somewhat organized and formatted set of liner notes for Strawberry here: Lyr Add: Mudcat CD Strawberry liner notes I forgot to add your last comment, Art, but will post it in that thread. If folks will reserve that thread for specific corrections, lyrics, and additions to the blurbs from the artists and composers, it will be pretty easy for other folks to edit the liner notes themselves. FWIW, it took me about 3 hours to do that job (in case you're interested in doing liner notes for the other CDs). I will revise the liner notes after I get the contributors' corrections and addenda. It would be helpful to have © dates for you folks' original compositions! We still don't have lyrics for the following songs on that CD: Rag, Eh?* Rolling Down To Old Maui** Beyond The Stone Circle* Girl On The Rim Of The World Galway City** Billy The Kid** Handful Of Songs (and is the composer our own Jerry Rasmussen?) Feels Like the Blues The Bigot's Song (and, Roger, your lyrics are hard to understand on the CD in some places) Hangman** Carrickfergus** Bold Jackie Tar** I've Had That Happen To Me Young Redin** Lovely Joan** If you feel so inclined, please post your lyrics or a link to them. Genie *BSEG, Rick and Alison ;-D **I know these are traditional songs, but there are often many versions. |
