Subject: proposed movies about the Beatles From: keberoxu Date: 21 Feb 24 - 04:38 PM Someone else can link to the story, it's out there on the internet. Director Sam Mendes has gotten permission from the surviving Beatles, and the families of the two departed Beatles, to make four life-story films, one for each of the four Beatles. I have mixed feelings about this one. A mini-series is one thing, but four feature-length films? |
Subject: RE: proposed movies about the Beatles From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 21 Feb 24 - 05:43 PM So-called "fans" will buy anything that has the above blessing. The rest of us are free to watch something else, and to listen to our own choice of Beatles music. If however I were forced at gunpoint to watch either this series or "The Crown", I know what I'd choose. |
Subject: RE: proposed movies about the Beatles From: GUEST Date: 22 Feb 24 - 07:03 AM No doubt they will be crap. Sorry, biopics always are! Fine it you don't know their stories inside and out, but almost every detail of the four main Beatles' lives has been picked over to the bone marrow. The contradiction of Lennon and Harrison's personalities, drugs alcohol and flings, are difficult to reflect, (the domestic bliss myth of Lennon's 70's years etc). At least three Beatles have some unsavoury aspects in periods of their lives, that are often glossed over. What is truth, and whose truth? Some films capture atmosphere, but not truth, as they usually get some of the casting wrong, the music wrong, and the historical facts wrong, (always 'dramatic license'). Also, often the 'truth' is doctored in biopics to get a lower age rating audience certification. This is just yet more merchandising and promotion of the Beatles to flog the horse in as many commercial ways as they can while copyright exists on their recordings. |

Subject: RE: proposed movies about the Beatles From: gillymor Date: 22 Feb 24 - 11:40 AM There was a movie set in their early years together called Back Beat that was not too bad. It was mostly set in Hamburg and involved their relationship with Stu Sutcliffe. |

Subject: RE: proposed movies about the Beatles From: GUEST,SteveShaw Date: 22 Feb 24 - 06:14 PM I'm puzzled by some of the negativity expressed in this thread about something that hasn't even been made yet! Watch it and love it. Or watch it and hate it, then turn it off! |
Subject: RE: proposed movies about the Beatles From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 24 Feb 24 - 04:48 PM A great book that covers the subjects is a first person narrative: Here, There, and Everywhere - My Life Recording the Music of THE BEATLES By: Geoff Riddick and Howard Massey Forward by: Elvis Costello Publisher: Gotham Books - March 2006 At age 15 Geoff lands a dream job at EMI - Abbey Road Studios. Sincerely, Gargoyle The innovation in the early years, i.e. suspending a speaker and spinning it during recording. Unlike so many Beatles books ... this is not "a snow job.' |
