Subject: George Harrison Would Have Been 64 Today
From: Alec

He started out as a Skiffle performer, was a friend & sometime collaborator of Dylan's,wrote a song ("If I Needed Someone")which was inspired by "The Bells Of Rhymney" & another ("I Me Mine") which was inspired by French Chanson.Very few people have inspired more people to pick up a guitar & learn to play it.He was also a great champion of the Uke.
Neither Folk nor Blues artist he was well liked by afficionados of both.
He would have been 64 today.64 being the age Paul sang about & '64 being the year his old band went global.
Lost too soon to cancer.Though being stabbed could not have helped.
I liked this guy.
Anybody else?

A friend of mine in Henley used to work for him as a gardener. He said he was a good bloke. I don't think there was any more great music to come from him, but that is no reason not to wish anyone a long life and good health. (The same goes for John Lennon). I am sure anyone would have wished them some happy years to see out their lives. I believe that in the case of both Lennon and Harrison, their final years were happy ones. They certainly both helped to bring something into my youth that was quite irreplaceable. I will always be grateful to them.

I was never a big Beatles fan, but I can tolerate them. My sister-in-law adores them, and when she plays their CD's, it's the Harrison songs that make me stop what I'm doing and listen. Even during their psychedelic days, his songs were down to earth. I consider him to be the most talented of the group. Thanks, and RIP.
Steve

It's worth noting that when no mainstream studio would touch the Python Film, Life of Brian, (on the basis that they would probably lose if anyone brought an obscenity writ) George Harrison stepped forward with the readies.

Yes, George's songwriting talents were unfortunately often overlooked because of the comparison with Lennon & McCartney.

On the rare occasions when I play the Beatles' old albums these days, it's usually his songs that make me think "this is a better song than I remember". Perhaps he was ahead of his time?

And he was a George Formby fan too, so he must've been a good bloke.

This is the man that gave away one of his guitars,as a birthday present, to JOE BROWN --!! George should always be revered for that, if not for his other ,not inconsiderable, achievements !!

I always thought the Indian music was a bit of a bummer, within you without you etc. That aside, I thought he was great.

A favourite Harrison quote.Eric Idle was complaining to George that his contributions to Monty Python were being marginalised in order to accomodate Chapman & Cleese's material.Idle at one point said to Harrison "Can you imagine what it's like to have to deal with two rampant egomaniacs every working day."
Harrison just smiled and said "Well I do have some experience of that sort of thing, yes."

My favorite Beatle, hands down. I was deeply saddened by his death, and think he was certainly under-appreciated.

Funny things tastes, weelittledrummer - I actually liked George's Indian-influenced stuff; nice phrase construction, interesting riffs. Perhaps my own background (I like arabic and Indian music, Turkish too) made them more palatable.

I liked several of his other songs too. He had an ear for a catchy tune, that's sure, even if his lyrics were not the greatest.

In mourning him, it's hard for someone like me to dissociate from mourning a symbol of my generation and my own youth; but I wish I'd met him, and if I had, by all accounts I would have liked him. He did good, not only well. And for that alone he deserves a respectful nod.

A very distinctive guitarist. He was not a guitar hero or a guitar technician. However, only he could have completed the Beatles sound the way he did. The riffs on "I Feel Fine" or "Ticket To Ride" were a huge part of what made that music exciting. For the Beatles, he was absolutely perfect. As to him being a good bloke, ditto to what George said.

George H's (as opposed to George P above!) use of the sitar in the Beatles' music was very influential in 1960s western pop music and a lot of what followed owed a lot to that - the Stones, Small Faces and many of the 'psychedelic' groups were influenced by it.

Even if you don't like the 'Indian' sound, if you try to listen to the songs underlying it, they are good songs in their own right. I remember hearing Paul McCartney saying something like that about Within You, Without You.

I look at you all and see the love there that's sleeping,
While my guitar gently weeps.
I look at the floor, and I notice it needs sweeping,
Still my guitar gently weeps.

... not to mention "Devil's Radio," from his Traveling Wilburys days:

I heard it in the night
Words that thoughtless speak
Like vultures swooping down below
On the devil's radio

I hear it through the day
Airwaves gettin' filled
With gossip broadcast to and fro
On the devil's radio.

My favorite Beatle, too. His little scene in "Hard Day's Night" (the trip to the producer of the TV show featuring "that posh bird who gets everything wrong") was wonderful.

And he championed the uke! Who could argue with that?

Bob

Somewhere I read that George almost always found a way to slip in an augmented chord to just about any song he wrote.

Always my favourite Beatle. I loved George's entry in 'Who's Who?' which simply said: George Harrison - Musician.
