Subject: Mr. Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 02 Nov 04 - 12:09 AM I know this is a folk site, but who here agrees that "Plastic Ono Band" and "Walls and Bridges" our his best albums ever! Any Lennon fans out there |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: mousethief Date: 02 Nov 04 - 12:25 AM Rubber Soul was his best album ever. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 02 Nov 04 - 12:41 AM Well, I'm talking about solo. It'd be different with Beatles tunes... |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,T-boy Date: 02 Nov 04 - 08:09 AM Agree with you on 'P.O.B.', much better than dreary 'Imagine'. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 02 Nov 04 - 01:25 PM Don't know about best album, but in my opinion 'Working Class Hero' is his best song. Rings true on so many levels. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 02 Nov 04 - 05:28 PM 'Rings true on so many levels'. Apart from the fact that he wasn't one. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Cluin Date: 02 Nov 04 - 05:41 PM Maurice Lennon is a great fiddler. I liked his work with Stockton's Wing and especially his tune "If Ever You Were Mine". |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Once Famous Date: 02 Nov 04 - 05:53 PM I thought we were talking about the Lennon Sisters. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Auggie Date: 02 Nov 04 - 10:58 PM Lennon never claims to be a working class hero in the song, and Blissfully Iggy couldn't be more right. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 03 Nov 04 - 03:59 AM One of my absolute favs from "P.O.B."! Along with "God", Mother", and "Love"... and the best song on "Imagine" was "How Do You Sleep"! |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: gigix Date: 03 Nov 04 - 07:30 AM And don't forget Charlie Lennon Luigi |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Georgiansilver Date: 03 Nov 04 - 08:05 AM I suppose Lenin must have had a following but i don't know any of his songs. Can't understand Russian anyway. Best wishes. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Brakn Date: 03 Nov 04 - 10:30 AM And John Lennon's father Freddie did have a single out in 1965 called "That's My Life". Also contary to everything published about John's family, John's grandfather was a freight clerk in Liverpool where he was also born, and not a well known singer born in Ireland. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Paco Rabanne Date: 03 Nov 04 - 10:32 AM Lennon is also desparated over rated! |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Cllr Date: 03 Nov 04 - 10:38 AM Superted, it depends on whether it is waxed or unwaxed, personnally I can't rate unwaxed lemmon highly enough. Cllr |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 03 Nov 04 - 12:50 PM Wakey wakey Teddy Boy... You're one of those softies that prefer Macca's pop? |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,vinyl junkie Date: 03 Nov 04 - 01:10 PM Imagine was a fine album but the title song was maudlin boring crap. of course he is over rated. Every body of taltnet in popular culture is; but he was an excellent singer and song writer. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Paul McCartney Date: 03 Nov 04 - 01:11 PM His solo work was rubbish and he ruined the Beatles, an overwise great group. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 03 Nov 04 - 01:53 PM It was Macca that decided to use the break up as publicity... After all the others quit already! I love him but that was f***in' low..... |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 04 Nov 04 - 09:08 PM "'Rings true on so many levels'. Apart from the fact that he wasn't one." Yes, but it shows a capacity for empathy. Isn't that common amongst great songwriters, the ability to imagine themselves walking in anothers' shoes? Frustration, fear, and desparation are felt by everyone at some point in their lives- it's just amplified by a lack of money. The song certainly holds a lot of truth for me, being working class, if not a hero, and it eloquently describes how i feel a lot of the time. When i've just been screwed over again, and i'm thinking the only way i'm going to get out of the situation is in a box- well, i put on Working Class Hero, and i'm comforted by the fact that someone understands and has the balls to say it out loud. And quite frankly i'm not going to give two flying f***s whether that person is living in the gutter or in a mansion, the important thing is, they understand. They can empathise, and they can vocalise. Hypocritical? Maybe. Invaluable? To me, definetly. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 05 Nov 04 - 12:08 PM Personally, I think the Harlem Globetrotters were never the same after Meadowlark Lemon retired. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Nov 04 - 02:22 PM John, and all the Beatles, were working class "by birth" (as kids), regardless of the fact that they became millionaires. Doesn't that make 'em all "working class heroes" of a sort? Of course, I'm just an American, and probably don't understand all the fine distinctions of the English class system. Maybe they were only lower-middle-class but not truly working class (?) |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 05 Nov 04 - 02:53 PM Well, here in Britian we have a tendency to despise anyone who 'betrays' their class by making something of themselves...apparantly if someone from a working class background becomes wealthy, it renders all previous experience of poverty null an void. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Auggie Date: 05 Nov 04 - 06:53 PM Over here we would phrase it as "don't git above your raisin'",in fact I'm sure there's an old country song to that effect, but regardless, the sentiment is the same |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 06 Nov 04 - 12:56 AM The phrase is "Remember where you came from" and Lennon obviously did.... |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 06 Nov 04 - 06:58 AM Blissfull, I think what we despise in this country is someone who sings about working class heroes and then keeps a whole floor of the Dakota building to store his and his wife's fur coats. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 06 Nov 04 - 01:20 PM Well, i don't. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:03 PM And do you have ANY idea what you're talkin' about Born Again Souser? |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:06 PM Good for you. Doubtless you are an equally fervent admirer of other 'Working Class Heroes' - like Jim Davidson, perhaps? |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:29 PM Did you hear that? I could of sworn i just heard someone missing the point entirely... It's helpful, when replying to a statement, to actually read it first...:0) |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:35 PM The point being what exactly? |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:44 PM The point being, i like 'Working Class Hero' and the socio-economic status of its' author is of no consequence to me. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:49 PM 'Well, here in Britian we have a tendency to despise anyone who 'betrays' their class by making something of themselves...apparantly if someone from a working class background becomes wealthy, it renders all previous experience of poverty null an void. ' Where did that come from, then? |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:51 PM It came from my (obviously completely ridiculous) lack of jealousy and bitterness. |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:58 PM How come someone with such a lack of jealousy and bitterness is such a fan of John Lennon? |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 06 Nov 04 - 03:01 PM Because he's real... He always told the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts. Dun'it? |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 06 Nov 04 - 03:06 PM "Because he's real... He always told the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts. Dun'it?" What he said.:0) |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: GUEST,Chris B Date: 06 Nov 04 - 03:07 PM I rest my case..... |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 06 Nov 04 - 03:10 PM On very flimsy evidence... |
Subject: RE: Lennon From: chris nightbird childs Date: 06 Nov 04 - 03:13 PM One of my favorite quotes is "Tact is for people that aren't witty enough to be sarcastic." And John Lennon didn't even say that! : )~ |
