               John Lennon was killed on either the eighth or ninth of December 1980, depending on whether you were in Britain or America when you heard the news. The killing happened almost two months to the day after his fortieth birthday.
       I still feel that shock and bewilderment when I think of the pointlessness of his death.
       I may upset some people by saying this, but I also regret that the man who shot him, who was mentally ill at the time of the killing, is still incarcerated. I think twenty four years loss of freedom is enough retribution. I can't imagine John Lennon (who was no saint himself) being so lacking in compassion.

It's just before 8am in London, 8 November 1980, and we're driving down Abbey Road, approaching THAT pedestrian crossing. Eight o'clock news comes on the radio and the guy in front of me was just driving over the crossing and he swerved so wide he almost hit an oncoming car.

Alanabit, I think you will find it was November but I stand to be corrected. I believe John Lennon died on 8th November when I was on another..yet another Child Care Course.

Without Lennon-McCartney, we would have had no "Helter Skelter" (mainly Macca), no "Get Back" (mainly Macca) and no "I Saw He Standing There", (mainly Macca), let alone "I Am The Walrus" and "Revolver". Some people only liked one type of rock and roll, but I was always glad to see the back of Billy Fury, Adam Faith and all those other suit wearing wimps of the early sixties. What next, a Ronnie Carroll revival?

I as you still feel the tradgic sorrow of Johns Passing. I remember where i was and still recall the shock of the news. Anybody else but John. He may not have been a saint but nobody deserves to be shot in cold blood. And that insane crap is just an excuse. I think myself that insane bastard should be shot hung have gas poured on him and set a blazed and shot some more. To loose a musican and poet such as John is still unimaginable..Although i also believe the words of John Prine when he sings the words. Jesus dont like killing no matter what the reasons for..Be free and happy kindaloupehackenweez...PEACE.
   P.S. I miss and love John. No one can mix words with music and heart and soul like John. Except maybe Hank Williams. George didnt deserve brain cancer either,. But in the end we all are what we want to be.    Dust in the wind.

At the time, I felt just the same way about Mark David Chapman as you do. But that's no excuse for taking revenge. The test of compassion is whether you can apply it to the unattractive as well as those who are easy to empathise with.
There are very few peole who kill for either pleasure or reward. Most killers are at least temporarily unbalanced. Make no mistake, John Lennon opposed the death penalty. It has gone from all civilised countries in the world. We don't miss it. Peace for me means peace between all men. I find it hard to take that some of the most brutal killers of Northern Ireland are walking around scot free, but that was the price we had to pay for peace. It doesn't come cheap, but it's worth it.
Mental illness really does exist, I am afraid. Mentally ill people can be boring, time consuming and downright aggressive. They deserve as much compassion as any other sick people. My life has brought me into a lot of contact with the mentally ill. It is not always easy to see the good in them, but I do not believe we have the right to exclude them from society unless they represent a real and present danger. I do not believe that is true of Lennon's killer any more. I detest the deed itself, but the man deserves a chance of freedom.
The word "peace" can slip from our tongues very glibly. It is actually very hard to achieve and maintain.

John Lennon was a scrote in much the same way as the Gallaghers are now. He ripped. He knew about 5 or 6 chords and relied on the talents of others to enhance this lack of musicality (now there's a word). (Macca and Martin). Write a hundred songs and you will come up with one or two that are ok. (mainly Macca?)

I grew up with the Beatles music and saw them live at the Cavern. Nuff said for my part.

To Alanabit. I thank you for your feed back and due respect it. I cant imagine taking another life but in a survival situation one probly dont know exactly how they would respond until it actually occurred the thought of reliving the taking of another life every night i lay down and every morning i wake up totally scares me and would probly be one of the unjustifable and unforgivable sins amaginable. When i was a younger person and the Catholic faith no longer reconized the concehenish objector way out of the vietnam war. i asked a priest "Why do we have a commandment that says thou shalt not kill. Yet were expected to do so for our country? He told me "Because its alright to kill if its in defense of your own country"
Needless to say. My parents couldnt get me into the church again.   But still the thought of not only loosing a musician poet but and insperation to many. Some of his music still puts a lump in my throat and about tears me up that he tryed so hard to spread the word of peace and understanding.Threats also roll off tounge easily. For words are mightier than the sword. Fire that puppy up and pass it on. Right on dude.
   To Chris nightbird Sounds way cool too. But with a hint of savagetry. I guess that makes me one of thous with a bible in one hand and a six gun in the other..Threats also roll off tounge easily.

Johns Death also maked the end of ever having a Beatles reunion concert for which i was still to young to attend but remember my mom sitting me down and making me read the article in the paper of there breaking up. Hi kind....weez. I am still going through that way of thinking. I quite like the definition of morality which has gained some concensus on Mudcat. Basically, it is a sense of responsibility for the effect of your actions on others. I do not think it is just about "right and wrong". We can decide for ourselves what is right and what is wrong, but we can't always do that for others. You have effectively raised the issue that we can face complex moral dilemmas and there is not always an easy test of what is the right decision.
People without any moral compass are frightening, because they are essentially selfish. People who think their moral choices should apply to everyone are essentially tyrants. They are quite frightening too. I don't know the answers, but I am asking the questions - and listening!
