According to the BBC, 6 Brazilians who were coming to the Liverpool Beatles Fest were turned back by British immigration when they could not answer basic questions like who Yoko Ono was, whether Ringo Starr was dead, and they were played various Beatle songs and asked to identify them. A spokesperson for the whole contingent (72 of them!) said they were just kids, and were coming to check out bands in general.

Hmm. Does raise the spectre of amusing questions one might be asked at immigration.

"So you say you are going to the Hank Williams Memorial Concert? A likely story. What kind of bird was too blue to fly?"

"So, foreign scum, travelling to Canada to check out our music, eh? Was Edmund Fitzgerald (a) our first prime minister; (b) the translator of the Rubyaiat of Omar Khayyam; or (c) a big boat in trouble?

Was this an actual story?

If so, it appears British customs is doing a better job keeping out potential terrorists than the U.S. (I've known the Brazilians have had a major grudge against Liverpool for years. Something about a football match gone bad.

Can you imagine what the questions would have been in 1963? (Presumably for these kids, the Beatles are ancient history) ------

"What animal in the window was being considered for purchase?"

"Glenn Miller's most famous piece is?"

"He was born the next of kin to what?"

"Let's take a kayak to Quinsey and what other town made famous in a Frank Sinatra song?"

But then you lost me. Glenn Miller's most famous piece? I dunno. Ava Gardner? Or was that Harry James?

A kayak to Quinsey? Chicago was Sinatra's kind of town but so was New York New York, but I don't know kayak songs.
