Subject: Hasidic/slow Klezmer CD recommendations?
From: mooman
Date: 09 May 05 - 10:39 AM

I'm fairly familiar with klezmer music by well-known bands such as The Klezmatics but would be very interested in recommendations for further listening for some of the slower style klezmer and Hasidic music and song.

I know there are some experts on this on Mudcat and look forward to receiving some pointers!

Peace and thanks in advance,

moo

I'm no expert and don't much care for it myself, but not far from here there is a very large yearly festival devoted to Kleizmer. Bet they have a website, if they do, check the billings.
One CD I do like is Muzsikas's Matamaros, which is Jewish music from Transylvania, the sort of music my ancestors would have made.

Many thanks Allen,

I have Muzsikas' Matamaros myself (bought in Hungary) and excellent it is too. This is the style I am especially interested in.

Peace

Well, it isn't Klezmer.
All Eastern European Jewish music sorta gets lumped together.
For you clarinet afficionados this looks like the jackpot:

you could try The Jews Brothers.. a New Zealand band, or Klezmania, an Australian klezmer band.

I've recently bought quite a few klezmer CDs and many of them have similar selections of tunes, especially the classics from early USA recordings. There are slow melodies which are very beautiful I have some on the various CDs of Burning Bush- I can't remember which exactly, but there is a group of religious chants that they play as melodies, which are very moving. I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and got some useful info from american cats.

Many thanks to all so far and especially to Allen for all the links:

One or two of the Matamaros pieces might I think form part of a Klezmer repertoire although many, especially the slower pieces, seem to be versions of liturgical Hasidic melodies of the type mentioned by Fogie. I'll look at the Burning Bush catalogue as it's those beautiful, moving, melodic pieces I'm especially interested in.

Peace,

moo

The Hasidic chants are called nigunim, singular nigun.
Not sure if there is much difference really between a nigun and a zmirah.
Hasidim were really like the Hippies of the Jewish world, or to be serious, what Sufiism is to Islam. Music and dance are an essential part of their lifestyle. It's a way for the common man to keep in touch with God.
In fact it often borders on an ecstatic trance.

I have a CD here in that style, by a group from Washington State called the Mazeltones. "Dancing With the Little Ones" is the title of the CD and one of the songs.

Shanachie has a CD of synagogue music taken from 78rpm records. You can't order directly from them, but you can get all their recordings from Amazon.

Kapelye is another good slow band, but I'm not sure if any of their recordings are still available.

Check out Deboarh Strauss (violin) & Jeff Warschauer (guitar), a duo that used to be part of the Klezmer Conservatory Band. They have an excellent CD that I bought at their show in Brooklyn. I don't know if it is in stores.

You might check out some of Andy Statman's material---one of which is Klezmer Soul.   Slow and quite poignant.

Let me also say that I am doing a program on WFDU which we call Sunday Simcha that will feature a lot of this type of material---among a great variety of other things.

It airs every Sunday from 10-12 AM Eastern Time.

Andy Statman is brilliant. You may have heard his haunting "Flatbush Waltz". There are, of course, I number of books available on the history of Klezmer music.

There are also about 20-30 old Klez threads where one might find some more recommendations, and since the results were spelled various ways, just filter for and set the time back to All-- they'll pop right up as a clickable menu.

Or have a listen to the Polish band, Kroke. They also recorded an album with Nigel Kennedy.

I highly recommend the Cracow Klezmer Band (now renamed the Bester Quartet). The music is brilliant, enchanting and extremely moving!
