Subject: Know a Good site for Italian lyrics?
From: GUEST,Giannina
Date: 13 Aug 01 - 06:55 PM

I keep searching various websites--to no avail!--for the Italian lyrics to "C'est La Luna," made popular by Louis Prima. I would also like the Spanish lyrics to "Vaya Con Dios," and "Before The Next Teardrop Falls."

Do you know of any sites where I can get lyrics in Italian (and other languages, e.g., French, Spanish, Yiddish, German, Norwegian, Hawaiian)?

I know these songs may not be Mudcat's" type, but I keep s triking out when I try other ways of searching.

I am not looking for sites to buy CD's. Not that I am opposed to buying them, but I specifically want to be able to hear the song(s) and have the lyric sheet, too, in order to learn the song. Many CD's do not have lyric sheets, and sheet music by itself is not as helpful as having both.

Volkslieder is usually a good place for ethnic lyrics but neither of yours is there. I'll see what I can find. Hang loose, OK?

I don't know if Vaya con Dios has been translated into Spanish; I believe it was written in English; here is the English. I have no clue what would happen if you pasted it into Text Translator

VAYA CON DIOS

Now the hacienda's dark, the town is sleeping;
Now the time has come to part, the time for weeping.

Vaya con Dios my darling,
May God be with you my love.

Wherever you may be, I'll be beside you,
Although you're many million dreams away.
Each night I'll say a pray'r, a pray'r to guide you
To hasten ev'ry lonely hour of ev'ry lonely day.
Now the dawn is breaking through a gray tomorrow,
But the memories we share are there to borrow.

Vaya con Dios, my darling:
May God be with you, my love, my love,
May God be with you my love.

Now the village mission bells are softly ringing,
If you listen with your heart you'll hear them singing,
Vaya con Dios my darling,
May God be with you my love.

Wherever you may be I'll be beside you,
Although you're many million dreams away,
Each night I'll say a pray'r, a pray'r to guide you
To hasten ev'ry lonely hour of ev'ry lonely day.

Now the dawn is breaking through a gray tomorrow,
But the memories we share are there to borrow,
Vaya con Dios, my darling!
May God be with you, my love, my love,
May God be with you my love.

(It looks to me like the phrase/title C'est La Luna is French, not Italian........didn't find anything about it, do you have another phrase from it?)

This site is a good source of French Lyrics In the upper left hand corner you'll find a choice of Québec et Acadie or Europe. I have found it helpful with lyrics to many songs, especially for Québec et Acadie, as they say.

Another very interesting site for lyrics is specific to Silent Night, Sainte Nuit, Stille Nacht, Glade Jul, Stilla Natt, etc, etc. 155 versions of Silent Night in 106 different languages! I LOVE this site, and of course, the many versions of the song. As an aside, my current favorites are Carola Häggkvist ~~ Swedish, Sissel Kyrkjebø ~~ Norwegian, and Marie-Michèle Desrosiers ~~ French Canadian. No extra charge for that.

If you really want more of the same, primarily artist specific, let me know who you are looking for, and I'll tell you if I know where to find them or can locate them. For example, Go here for Carola's lyrics, mostly in Swedish Click on the album you want lyrics from, then when that page comes up, click lyrics, then the specific song. For example, here is Sov på min arm from the album of the same name. This is from the English version of her site, but if you scout around a bit, you can find it in Swedish, too. In fact, her bio is only in Swedish at present.

I haven't totally exhausted my resources, but I'd have to think for a bit, not to mention wasting lots of time if I put up links to people you are not interested in. So far my wanderings have not extended much beyond Swedish, Norwegian, German, French and Spanish.

Oops! It was very late and I had had a couple of 'bieri!" It is "C'e La Luna," (pronounced "che la loona") , not "C'est La Luna." It is definitely Italian ( "Mama mia... " in the chorus, sung by Louis Prima and Dean Martin, etc.) I just don't know most of the words.

Sorcha, I have heard Anna Cani (sp?) on the Lawrence Welk show sing it in Spanish. The spanish words may have been done as an afterthought, though, as the song was, I believe, written originally in English.

Sorcha, thanks for "Teardrops." I already knew it, but it's nice to have it printed out with chords.

Freddy Fender sings it in both English and Spanish. Do you know where I can find the Spanish words?

I actually have various lyric and music sheets for the English, but none of them contain the Spanish words.

Try here for C'e la Luna. It is the opening line of a song. The chorus has 'Mamma', but not 'Mamma mia'. At least it's worth a try.

And then there is always the Italian Folk Music Forum for questions.

I know C'e la Luna, but I don't know how to spell it in "Calabrese" (which is not Italian) I think there is also a Sicilain version. Anyway, I'll try to get back to you with the webb site.

Hard to find a decent site on the internet with Hawaiian songs. For about $10, I recommend Na Mele O Hawai'i Nei, with 101 songs. Sound clips are available for many songs on www.mele.com, a site with cds, vhs, etc. on Hawai'i for sale.

Also, the reason I couldn't find "C'e La Luna" is that the actual title is "Luna Mezzo Mare."

From: GUEST,Giannina (il mio nome in Italiano)
Date: 12 May 02 - 03:45 PM

I thought I'd post the lyrics Wolfgang referred me to so maybe someone can help with a problem. (Note that "Mamma mia me maritare" is a repeated hook line but is not in the actual chorus"

LUNA MEZZ'O MARE
(Sicilian dialect) Paolo Citarella (?)

C'e la luna mezz'o mare, Mamma mia, me maritari,
Figghia mia, a cu te dari, Mamma mia, pensaci tu.

CHO: O Mamma, piscia fritta baccala, O Mamma, piscia fritta baccala.

Si ci dugnu lu babberi (barber) Iddu va, Iddu veni
'u rasolu (razor) manu teni.

CHO.

Si ci dugnu lu scapparu (shoemaker) Iddu va, iddu veni
'u matteddu manu teni. (hammer)
Si ci pigghia la fantasia
Mi matteddia la figghia mia. CHO.

Si ci dugnu zuppunaro (farmer) Iddu va, iddu veni
'u zappuni manu teni. (plow)
Si ci pigghia la fantasia
Mi zappunia la figghia mia. CHO.

Si ci dugnu macillaiu (butcher) Iddu va, iddu veni
La sasizza manu teni. (sausage)

CHO.

Problem: The first verse and chorus fit with the tune I know, but the other verses have an extra line. How does that extra line work with the tune? Is there an extra musical line for the other verses?

Giannina

Damn! Many years ago, I posted a full Neapolitan version of "C'e 'na Luna Mmiezzo Mare," which is the Neapolitan spelling more or less. A gentleman wanted to sing it at his son's wedding. He was of Neapolitan background and that dialect worked for him. He did sing it there, a great success.

Don't know where it's disappeared to, don't seem to have a copy. Rats.... Don't know if I could reconstruct it now. You know, I just remembered. I found the verses in Sing Out! Frank and I reconstructed the chorus from memory though, the Sing Out one was not what we remembered.

Here's how Frank and I remembered the chorus, I think I learned it from Lou Monte though, not from my family :-)

Ay Ay ya, Pisce fritt' e baccala', Oi cumpa', pisce fritt' e baccala'

where by the way cumpa' is pronounced "goombah," anybody remember Godfrey & La Rosa saying "hey goombah!" to each other or is that another of my misplaced memories?

Well this just thread creep I guess....

Why is it so difficult to find the lyrics (even in Italian, let alone with a translation) for well-known songs like Mascagni's "Serenata" and G. Sibella's "Girometta"?

I keep searching the web but it seems as if the Italians don't want us poor foreigners to learn the words of their beautiful songs. Is it something to do with copyrights maybe? Or is it a beginner like me not searching correctly?.............HELP!

I came across "The Little Shoemaker" here (click) and I figured I'd better post it before it gets lost.
-Joe Offer-

THE LITTLE SHOEMAKER
(Rudy Revil/Geoffrey Parsons/John Turner)
The Little Shoemaker

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: Most lyrics sung by entire group. (words sung by lead
only)

Tap, tap, stitch and tap
Make me a pair of shoes

Lei scarpini de bailare, bailare.
Bailaremos tutusi.
Lei scarpini de bailare, bailare.
Bailaremos con cosi.

In the shoemaker's shop this refrain would never stop
As he tapped away, working all the day
(At his bench, there was he, just as busy as a bee)
Little time to lose for the boots and shoes

But his heart went "pop" inside the little shop
When a lovely girl set 'em all a-whirl
She had come to choose some pretty dancing shoes
And he heard her say in a charming way

Shoes to set my feet a-dancing, dancing
Dancing, dancing all the day
Shoes to set my feet a-dancing, dancing
Dancing all my cares away

(Then he tapped and he stitched for his fingers were bewitched)
And he sewed a dream into every seam
(Making shoes, oh, so neat just like magic on her feet)
And he hoped she'd know that he loved her so

But she danced, danced, danced as though she were entranced
Like a spinning top all around the shop
On her dainty feet she whirled into the street
And he heard her say as she danced away

Lei scarpini de bailare, bailare.
Bailaremos tutusi.
Lei scarpini de bailare, bailare.
Bailaremos con cosi.

Shoes to set my feet a-dancing, dancing
Dancing all my cares away

All my cares away!!

As recorded by The Gaylords, 1954

Peaked at # 2 in 1954
Competing version by Winterhalter's Orchestra & Chorus and a Friend hit #9. The uncredited lead singer was Eddie Fisher.

Joe,
Those "Italian" lyrics you posted for Little Shoemaker look more like Spanish to me, and when I listen to the Gaylords singing the song, that doesn't appear to be what they're singing either.
Lyr. Req. "Little Shoemaker" (Italian portion)

I'm also trying to find the lyrics to a lullabye The Gaylords sang called "Dormi, Dormi" (not to be confused with the Christmas song "Dormi, Dormi, Bel' Bambin'." No luck so far.

I have been looking for the lyrics and the artist who sings the 1964 hit "Sole Sole Sole" Many artists have sang this song......and there are slightly different versions of the song as well.....If my memory serves me right this song was sung by a female artist........I have done some research Siw Malmkvist and Umberto Marcato, Dean Martin and Pat Suzuki, and Laura Villa which I believe it is her version that I remember hearing when I was a young child.......

Here are some of the lyrics

Sole Sole Sole love me in the sunlight
Luna Luna Luna love me in the moonlight
afternoon and dont forget about the twillight
      any kind of starlight
      is the light about

The Italian part of the song goes

Le scarpine per ballare, ballare,
Balleremo tutt' il dì.
Le scarpine per ballare, ballare,
Balleremo ancor' così.

Transl.
The little shoes (made) for dancing
we'll dance all day long
The little shoes (made) for dancing
we'll still dance like that.

Looking for lyrics to Manella Mia. My CD's made from old 78's of Enrico Caruso are painful to decipher. Especially compounded by the Neapolitan dialect of the early 20th century. I grew up in NY with guys who were permitted to speak with their parents only in Italian. Unfortunately I have forgotten most of mine after many years. Help!!
