Subject: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: GUEST,Jim lazzari Date: 03 Apr 04 - 04:44 PM I have this song, maybe a folk song and it is about a mother and daughter talking of marriage and I think one of them is making excuses for every day of the week. I have the song I can send for someone to listen to. The only thing I have to go on is the title La Mia Mamma, but my searches have been futile using this title. Does anyone know the correct title to this song? I dont have the written lyrics but would desire them. A very catchy tune!! Jim |

Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: Johnny in OKC Date: 05 Apr 04 - 12:57 AM It's a vulgar song with a really catchy tune... the girl wants to get married, and mama advises her, Don't marry the baker, cause he'll put his bread in your oven, don't marry the fisherman, cause he'll put his cod in your pan, etc. etc. You can hear it in The Godfather at the wedding reception (!) It's better to leave this one alone, unless you're Italian. Or Sicilian. Love, Johnny |
Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 04 - 01:46 AM Johnny, Then I must have the wrong title as I listened to the tune and read the words to that song and they dont match. I must have a different song. Jim |
Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: GUEST,jim Date: 05 Apr 04 - 04:16 PM Johnny, The song you are thinking about is Lazy Mary. The song that I have mentions the days of the week and each verse builds on itself. It may be a children's song as one aquaintance of my brother says that her grandmother used to sing it to her when she was a little girl. I have a copy I can send to you if you wish to listen to it. Jim |

Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: Roberto Date: 07 Apr 04 - 10:50 AM I was wrong. The song that I think you are looking for is not from a children songs collection, but from a very important recording of Italian folk songs, featuring a source singer such as Giovanna Daffini and the first revivalists from the sixties: Giovanna Marini, Sandra Mantovani, Caterina Bueno, Michele Straniero etc. The lp, with a selection from a show of Italian folk songs that took place at Spoleto festival in 1964, was titled "Le canzoni di Bella Ciao" (The songs of Bella Ciao). The first and last song, was the now worldwide famous "Bella Ciao", first in the original version sung by the "mondine" (girls working as rice-pickers), and then in the version sung during the Resistance against nazism and the fascism. The lp is now available in CD in Italy, but there is also an edition by the French classical music label "harmonia mundi" (Bella Ciao, Chansons du peuple en Italie, HMA 195734), published in 2000. If you are interested in that and can't find the CD, contact me and I'll help you. The song: E MIA MAMA VOL CH'J FILA. Region: Piemonte. Tune: on a dance tune of the type called "monferrina". This recording from "Le Canzoni di Bella Ciao": sung by Sandra Mantovani and Michele L. Straniero. Other recordings: Fausto Amodei (on the 45rpm E.P. Il barone e la pastora, Ricordi and on the lp Folk Italiano, Family SFR-RI 651); Duo di Piadena, Canzoni della pianura padana. An italian book with this discography and information about the song: Canti Popolari Italiani, a cura di Giuseppe Vettori, Newton Compton 1974. Text (in the dialect of Piemonte): E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al lunez ma mi al lunez m'gratu le pulez E 'n po' d'su-si e 'n po' d'lu-la, la mia mama fé da sinha e da dizné la mia mamm vol ch'j fila e mi pos pà filé E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al màrtez ma mi al màrtez giogu le carte mi al lunez m'gratu le pulez E 'n po' d'su-si e 'n po' d'lu-la, la mia mama fé da sinha e da dizné la mia mamm vol ch'j fila e mi pos pà filé E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al mércul ma mi al mércul vadu da Bertu mi al màrtez giogu le carte mi al lunez m'gratu le pulez E 'n po' d'su-si e 'n po' d'lu-la, la mia mama fé da sinha e da dizné la mia mamm vol ch'j fila e mi pos pà filé E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al giobia ma mi al giobia munto 'ns 'la lobia mi al mércul vadu da Bertu mi al màrtez giogu le carte mi al lunez m'gratu le pulez E 'n po' d'su-si e 'n po' d'lu-la, la mia mama fé da sinha e da dizné la mia mamm vol ch'j fila e mi pos pà filé E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al v'nner ma mi al v'nner siasu la s'nner mi al giobia munto 'ns 'la lobia mi al mércul vadu da Bertu mi al màrtez giogu le carte mi al lunez m'gratu le pulez E 'n po' d'su-si e 'n po' d'lu-la, la mia mama fé da sinha e da dizné la mia mamm vol ch'j fila e mi pos pà filé E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al sabato ma mi al saba ciapu la paga mi al v'nner siasu la s'nner mi al giobia munto 'ns 'la lobia mi al mércul vadu da Bertu mi al màrtez giogu le carte mi al lunez m'gratu le pulez E 'n po' d'su-si e 'n po' d'lu-la, la mia mama fé da sinha e da dizné la mia mamm vol ch'j fila e mi pos pà filé E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al d'festa ma mi al d'festa stagu a la f'nestra mi al saba ciapu la paga mi al v'nner siasu la s'nner mi al giobia munto 'ns 'la lobia mi al mércul vadu da Bertu mi al màrtez giogu le carte mi al lunez m'gratu le pulez E 'n po' d'su-si e 'n po' d'lu-la, la mia mama fé da sinha e da dizné la mia mamm vol ch'j fila e mi pos pà filé English translation: My mother wants me to go a-courting on a Monday But me on a Monday, I scratch myself A little bit of this, a little bit of that, My mammy, Do the lunch, do the dinner My mammy wants me to go a-courting, but I really can't. Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: Roberto Date: 07 Apr 04 - 10:56 AM In the sixth stanza, in the Italian version, I've made a mistake writing "sabato" (saturday) instead of "saba". The song says "saba" (dialect for sabato = saturday), and nor sabato. So the line is: E mia mamm vol ch'j fila al saba. R |

Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: GUEST,Jim Date: 07 Apr 04 - 01:59 PM thanks so much Roberto, I believe the version that I have has the girls singing the song. Thanks to Q and Anie as well for your persistence. You have made more than one person happy with this discovery. I will be pursuing the purchases of the different versions and I am sure we will be hearing them on our local fm station(CKUA). They also on the web. I am greatful to you all. Jim |
Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: Roberto Date: 08 Apr 04 - 03:45 AM I've noticed I've made another typing mistake writing "mamm" instead of "mama" in the first line of every stanza. Please, correct it: "e la mia mama vol ch'j fila", and not "e la mia mamm ...". |
Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: GUEST,jim Date: 08 Apr 04 - 12:33 PM Will do,Roberto. When playing the song I have, and looking at the written lyrics, it doesnt it quite match in places. Does that mean I have a different version or dialect? I must assume so. Thanks again. Jim |
Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: Roberto Date: 08 Apr 04 - 01:14 PM Jim, I've taken the text from the booklet of the CD and from the book by Vettori (it is the same text), but I haven't checked the recording. I'll do that tonight and let you know tomorrow. R |
Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 08 Apr 04 - 01:41 PM Many vocalists add their own 'little touches' to their songs. It would be surprising not to find differences among the renditions. It would be nice to have the variations posted here. When an English language song enters the folk realm, dozens of variations develop- I am sure the same multiplicity is true of songs from other lands (may be not German; they tend to be more precise). |
Subject: RE: La Mia Mamma - is there such a song? From: Roberto Date: 09 Apr 04 - 11:07 AM Dear Jim, maybe the version you have is sung by Ombretta Colli. In this case, it is not really traditional, but an italianized version of the song I've posted before. It was recorded in 1969 for the italian pop music market, under the title La Mia Mama, and two guys, Casellato-Simontacchi, credit to themselves words and music. The tune is quite similar to the traditional one. I've never known the words by heart, although I remember the first line was: La mia mama vuol che sposi, vuol che sposi il lunedì (my mamy wants me to get married, get married on Monday). Then, the girl doesn't name different occupations, but different men she is busy with, one for every day of the week. And concludes (if I remember well): Cara mama, la mia mama vuol che sposi ma sposarmi non mi va (mamy dear, mamy wants me to get married, but to get married, I don't feel like). If this is the song you are loking for, it would be easy to write down the words if I could listen to it (while the traditional one has dialect words and expressions quite different from Italian), but unfortunatly it seems the recording is not available any more. Let me know if this could be the song you want and if you can make me listen to a MP3 file of it or something like that. Otherwise, we'll start a new search. Bye. R |
