Subject: Swinton Gathering 23 Oct 2004.
From: Dave the Gnome
Date: 24 Sep 04 - 06:34 AM

To celebrate 20 years of Swinton Folk Festival we are hosting a gathering of all fiends, old and new, at the White Lion, Swinton on 23 Oct 2004. There will also be a singaround on Friday 22 Oct.

As it is such a special occasion we thought that a thank you to everyone who has supported us would be in order. The event is going to be something really special with many of the artists who have supported up from the start including...

Stanley Accrington
Bandersnatch
Phil Hare
Geoff Higginbottom
Pete Ryder

There are of course many more who either don't know they are coming yet or do know and are too embarrased to be named. These may or may not include Gnomes and Spotty Dogs amongst the many Mudcatters and various Phils to ensure the music never stops and the bar profits remain high:-)

The whole day will be in the White Lion with many of the booked artists appearing in the all day singaround and session in the bar as well as at the afternoon Folk Club in the back room. You don't need to be going for the 'score' (musical pun intended) of course and new friends are just as welcome as old.

Think of it as an open day with music, song, drink and good company all day long:-) The only formal concert will be in the upstairs room in the evening where lack of space means we have to sell tickets at £3 and limit them to 55 in number:-(

Contact me here to book an evening ticket in advance or just come along and enjoy yourselves anyway.

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

Now, how's this for an advert. I was chatting to Martin Carthy on Saturday (name dropping or what) and...

Oh, well, OK. I was asking for his autograph on a Swinton Festival leaflet when he happened to spot a name on the leaflet.

"Pete Ryder!", says Martin (Mr Carthy to you) "I remember him. Local lad. Used to play at the MSG? Good guitarist..."

Now then, all of you who want to know what type of guitarist Martin Carthy remembers get yourselves down to Swinton...:-)

Cheers

DtG

(Sorry to use your name in a blatant plug, Martin. We will book you as soon as we can. Honest!)

I was talking to Pete Ryder last night. He is using Saturday at Swinton to release his new CD (Indian Summer). I related this little story to him. He was suitably amused and impressed.

FOG....you have to be there. It's like the tree in the forest....If you arn't there it couldn't really happen......!

Aah... what does Carthy know?! Hee hee!

Yes - Pete is one of the best - and has a very laid-back style. When I interviewed Rosie Hardman a few months ago, Pete's name came up in conversation... he's a living leg end!

FoG will definitely be there - unless he isn't...!! I daresay we'll also see Dai Thomas, Phil Atkinson, most of Redmayne, Hands in Pockets, Steve Chatterley, Bernard Cromarty (Who?!) and, of course, Basil!

I was talking to Jon Brindley the other day, and it's possible he may be there, too.

Jeff, the landlord, is laying on food once again, so there's no chance of starving... and I've got me ticket for the evening concert, so ner!

Des Friel has just finished an excellent guest appearance at the White Lion this evening with an appreciative audience - remember the New Bracken Band?!

See you Friday at the upstairs singaround?

Oh, and don't forget the Open Door Extravaganza on Sunday!!

After a question from John R and subsequent discussions with the 'committee' (well, 2 of us organisers anyway...) we can confirm that the evening concert upstairs is NON SMOKING! The pub may be foggy. The room may smell of years of smoke but there will be no smoking in the upstairs room that night:-) Well, apart from Pete Ryder possibly who is never seen without a roll-up sticking out of the head of his guitar. But Pete doesn't so much smoke a smoulder...

Cheers

Pete R can't manage a full set without at least lighting his rollup. He doesn't actually smoke the thing. He just rolls it , lights it and sets it on his guitar headstock. That old Gibson has a two pack a night habit. Explains why it's a really cool smokey colour.

I don't get excited by events anymore but this weekend is begining to look like a good 'un.

Why is it when you are waiting for something the time goes slower. I am sure I've been in work for about a month since this morning...

A great day's entertainment - and most of it free!!

Stanley Accrington brought the evening concert to a chaotic end, as was only to be expected!! Not a dry seat in the house!!

Phil Hare and Pete Ryder were both brilliant in their own way - two completely different performers, and both consummate professionals.

It was particularly good to see Staff Folk (Ged and Dave) open the evening concert - perhaps next year for the 21st anniversary we'll see them do a full guest spot?

The afternoon concert took the form of half hour spots, most of which were 'booked' when people volunteered (I did mine at 5:30pm).

I missed the start (Phil Atknison?), and when I arrived, Geoff Higginbottom was giving his all, followed by Theresa Tooley, and Charlie (all the way from Edinburgh!).

Redmayne were up next, always a pleasure to hear, Dai Thomas (the legendary blues man), Phil Seddon, Basil (a legend in his own lunchtime!), Chris Dunford (of Hands in Pockets), Ged Todd and Dave (the Gnome) Polshaw all entertained us in their own special ways.

Bandersnatch brought the afternoon concert to a fine end!

There was plenty going on in the bar area all afternoon and evening, too, so there was something for everyone.

Apologies to anyone I've missed - I'm sure DtG or StD will correct any errors or omissions!

Looks about right to me Bernard. There was Caz and John Brindley in the bar who deserve an honourable mention:-) Plus a few who's names I don't know! Going back at lunchtime to see if the two Phils make it. I don' thing they go home realy - just sit in the corner playing and singing for 36 hours or so...

See anyone who makes it later.

Phil S didn't, Phil A did! He was there with Steve proping the bar up at 12:10 when I popped in. By 1:30 when I had taken the bike home and come back to have a pint or three there was a good session going on:-)

Ah well. That's it for this this years festival but don't forget to put the 29th October 2005 in your diaries - It's our 21st year. Hopefuly we might come of age:-)

Cheers
