Subject: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: GUEST,highlandman Date: 18 Nov 08 - 05:49 PM ...in the U.S. TV commercial, circa 1970-ish. I know Tom Paxton wrote it, but whose voice sang it so hauntingly in that TV spot? I have a guess, because the voice sounds familiar to me, but does anybody actually know? There's a clip of the spot on youtube (blast my clicky-challenged self, but it's easily found). Thanks -Glenn |

Subject: RE: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: mandotim Date: 18 Nov 08 - 06:07 PM I listened to a better quality clip on the Smokey museum site. (The commercial is from 1972, by the way). The vibrato sounds a lot like Joan Baez. Tim |

Subject: RE: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: Don Firth Date: 18 Nov 08 - 07:22 PM It was sung in the science fiction movie "Silent Running" (1972) starring Bruce Dern. Here's a full synopsis of the movie (warning: spoiler alert!). CLICKY. The "film's theme song" was, of course, Joan Baez singing "Whose Garden Was This?" At the end of the movie, I don't think there was a dry eye in the theater. Good movie! It's available on DVD. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: Don Firth Date: 18 Nov 08 - 07:35 PM Sorry! Big boo-boo! The song Joan Baez sings as the greenhouse drifts off into space at the end of the movie is not "Who's Garden Was This?" But unless my memory is scrambled, it was sung as a voice-over somewhere earlier in the movie. I'll have to see it again to be sure. But it was still one heck of a movie! Don Firth |

Subject: RE: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: ClaireBear Date: 18 Nov 08 - 07:50 PM Assuming the "commercial" was really a 1972 public service spot on forest fire prevention, I think the YouTube being referred to is this one. I don't know who the singer is. It does sound a lot like Judy Collins (who I thik did sing this song), but I don't think it is. Mind you the sound's not very good on the video... |
Subject: RE: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: GUEST,highlandman Date: 19 Nov 08 - 12:01 PM Thanks for the replies. Yes, Claire, it was the forest service PSA, I shouldn't have called it a "commercial." I think it sounds like Judy Collins, but I couldn't find any attribution. Nor could I find any listing of that song on her discographies on the web (which as we all know is infallible...). I listened to Vera Lynn's recording, which was nice, but I really didn't think it was the same voice. And -- allowing for the quality of youtube -- it sounds more Judy than Joan to me. I guess we'll just leave it at that unless somebody can find some facts. Cheers -Glenn |
Subject: RE: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: C. Ham Date: 19 Nov 08 - 03:04 PM It might be Priscilla Herdman. I remember hearing her sing "Whose Garden Was This" a few times at concerts in the 1970's. |
Subject: RE: Who sang 'Whose Garden Was This'? From: oldhippie Date: 19 Nov 08 - 05:30 PM I also compared the youtube with Vera Lynn, and it is not the same music or voice. The vocal doesn't sound like Priscilla Herdman either. |
