Hi, Radiosteve.

I'm Italian, but I don't know this song and I don't understand what can means the word "zega".
Maybe is a song from south Italy (I'm from north); do you know from which region of Italy comes your mother?

La Vida Mia- The Jaci Velasquez song?
Eres mi vida? This is Spanish, not Italian or Neapolitan.

"zega" is not an Italian word, but most folk songs are in one or another of the many Italian dialects, some of which are very different from Italian--each dialect has is part of a regional culture, with it's own literature, music, poetry--that's why it's important to know where the song is from--

My grandmother sang the same song to me. She still sings it to my younger cousins and my family is from southern Italy (outside naples). I too can't find the lyrics.

Zega zega masten drega,

whatdya wanna, glass of beera,

where'sa the money inna the housea,

whatsa the address of the house?

Something like that. . . heh sorta. That's what it became anyway.

My Neopolitan grandmother used to sing the same song to me when I was small!

I don't know Italian and I haven't heard the song in at least 25 years but this is the nearest I can phoenetically decipher/remember what she was saying:

Zega zega
Mastichicci
Nubanila
Nimangiama
Nassasichi
Nisti bumbo!

Is this familiar to anyone?

In Neopolitan dialect, "s"gets changed to "Z" sometimes, and there is a word "Sega" that literally means "saw", but can mean something else, too. I am curious about this song--no one in my family remembers it--maybe someone else in your family knows the words,Michele--

Thank you, M Ted! You may be right about the "saw" thing because whenever she sang the song to me we did the same thing: I was sitting on her lap facing her, and she'd hold my hands/arms and almost "saw" me back and forth while singing. She'd push me forward and pull me back with each syllable.

I can't tell if those other Sega Sega lyrics are correct - they could be. But everyone in my family heard it/remembers it like I wrote it phoenetically above. Hmm. Thanks for posting that though!

My mother used sing it me and my younger brothers as she straddled us on her lap facing her, holding our hands or wrists and pulling us back and forth.

Sega, Sega
Mastu Ciccio
na panella e nu sasiccio
o sasiccio cio mangiamme
a panella cia stipamme

Loosely translated from the old Napoletano dialect above to English.

See-saw, See-saw
Maestro Francesco
a loaf of bread and a sausage
the sausage will eat now
the bread we'll save for later.

Old mentality in the poor old days after WWII when meat was hard to come by and not easily affordable, you'd eat the meat first and then if anyone came to visit, all you'd have to share was the bread.

From Scotland
When I was looking for something else on the web I stumbled across this item on Zega Zega (See Saw) which reminded me of a song my now 88 year old aunt used to sing to me as a young child and she just happened to pop in and I asked her about the words she used at the time. To my astonishment while she can harldly remember what she did earlier in the day - right away the words she used to sing came flooding out:
Zega, Zega
Zega Marega
Andiamo a Gaeta
A Gaeta ci sonno le donne
per fare la zega a la Madona

I have recently retired and turned 69 years old last week. I just started (yesterday) to try to learn Italian and brush-up on and expand my Neapolitan and have stumbled across this site while seeking to find the English translation to the Neapolitan songs I have loved so much. When I'm lucky I can understand about 50%.
Any way, I am very familiar with Sega, Sega. It is a rhyme sung to young children (as others have stated).

The child is rocked back and forth on the adult's lap. At the end of the recitation (at least in my family) the child is tickled and soon learns to anticipate this action, which adds to the fun.

My sister is the only one who has young grandchildren and we still play with the kids to this rhyme.

I would say Enzo has it exactly right, except for the part about WW II. I can definitely attest that it was around before then.

There is another children's rhyme we grew-up with, I know I will kill the spelling, but it goes something like this: Mooja musille, pan a casille, tu mangast and nona dist.Anyone else know this one and do you have any more lyrics?

I really appreciate this site and the input from all of you.

znthrG Vangelis uses a technique of recording all tracks simultaneously on tape, using a device especially manufactured for him which he calls the "Direct box".
"He explains his customary method of approach. As soon as the musical idea is there, as many keyboards as possible are connected to the control-desk, which in turn are directly connected to the applicable tracks of the multi-trackmachine.

btw, my grandmother used to sing these songs to me in nnapulitano as well...

Spati mane cca vene papá,
port' 'e zzuccare a ttu mammá

and you would clap hands...translated it means clap hands til daddy comes, he's bringing sugar to your mother....better known as clap hands clap hands til daddy comes home, daddy's got money and mommy's got none.

And

"Ninna nanna Baby...
Comme vene, papá
E tu port' 'o candy...
Ninna nanna, baby"

kinda a mix there between eng. and nnapulitano

My nonna used to sing something that phonetically sounds like:
zega zega Mastuciccio
A pannelle and oo salcicce
OO salcicce e zhio mangiamme
A panelle and giustebamme
Giusetebamme en do de da du
And (baby's name)
Vui Vui Vui (tickles)

It's been passed down many times and no one can ever say what it means. Something about bread and sausage.

It's one of the many versions of "Sega, sega mastu Ciccio"

Sega, sega mastu Ciccio,
na panèlla e nu sacìccio;
'a panèlla nce 'a mangiàmmo
e 'o sacìccio nce 'o stipàmmo;
nce 'o stipàmmo...

Seca seca, masto Ciccio,
'na panella e 'no sasiccio:
'o sasiccio ce 'o mangiamme
e la panella ce 'a stipamme.

Rough translation
Saw, saw, master Ciccio
A bread and a sausage
the sausage, we eat it,
the bread, we keep it

We recently found relatives of ours in Italy (near Naples). During the course of our visit, we asked them if they knew the "Zega, Zega" song (at that time we thought it started with a Z). They proceeded to sing it to us! It was passed down in our American Italian family phonetically, but our Italian cousins gave us the proper wording:

SEGA SEGA MASTU' CICCIO

Sega sega mastu' ciccio
ca' panella e co' sasiccio
o' sasiccio 'ncio' mangiamme
'a panella 'ncia' stipamme
'ncia' stipamme 'ndo' tiraturo
fuje (insert baby's name here) co' sorice 'nculo!

Seca seca, mastu Ciccio,
'Na panella e nu saciccio,
'A panella ci' âstipammo,
E 'o saciccio ce 'o magnammo.

[This song has the footnote:]

Dicesi questo canto alla stessa maniera del precedente.

[Roughly: "This song is sung in the same manner as the previous one." The previous song has the following footnote:]

Questo canto si dice tenendo il putto sulle ginocchia fermo e, pigliate nelle proprie mani quelle di lui, tirando e mollando. Giungendo al 6° verso si bacia il bimbo, e giungendo poi all' ultimo verso si bacia in bocca.
