Subject: PEL - 'Demo' Fleetwood 30th Jan 2003 From: clansfolk Date: 18 Jan 03 - 05:08 PM New Date for "DeMo" - confirmed with presenter - ignore last Thread:- What is proposed:- On Thursday 30th January 2003 at Fleetwood Lancashire England (just up the coast from Blackpool and home of the Fylde Folk Festival) The BBC Blue Bus is coming to the Steamer Hotel - the Blue bus is a community interest and IT equipped bus that visit various locations during the week, interviews local people, explains IT and allows access to the internet etc via 6 onboard computers - at 4.05 pm there is a 25 minute program transmitted from the bus to Radio Lancashire listeners. John Bond and myself will be at the steamer from early morning through the day, we will take our musical instruments (but don't let that put you off!), the Petition for people to sign and details of how to sign online (hopefully via The Blue Bus) and details of EDM 331 and how to contact MPs etc...... It would be great if as many people as possible could come along, bring instruments (and as long as the Landlord OKs it) have a play and sing..... maybe get interviewed? Help pass the word and explain the situation to members of the unaware public. I know it's a working day for most of you - and many will be restricted by travel - but pass on the message to anyone you think might be interested and would like to come along - The Steamer is right next to the Market (which is open) so hopefully there should be a few people about having a look at the Blue Bus......... There has also been talk of a "phone-in" on radio Lancashire re. new proposals http://groups.msn.com/UKPEL What is proposed:- On Thursday 30th January 2003 at Fleetwood Lancashire England (just up the coast from Blackpool and home of the Fylde Folk Festival) The BBC Blue Bus is coming to the Steamer Hotel - the Blue bus is a community interest and IT equipped bus that visit various locations during the week, interviews local people, explains IT and allows access to the internet etc via 6 onboard computers - at 4.05 pm there is a 25 minute program transmitted from the bus to Radio Lancashire listeners. Subject: LYR ADD: PEL - 'Demo' Fleetwood 30th Jan 2003 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Jan 03 - 06:13 PM Good for you! Too far for me to get there - though I try to get to Fylde Festival most years if I can. But Fleetwood is one place where this should be happening. I know there are a lot of people up there who wouldn't see themselves as folkies, but they love they Festival and appreciate the music around the town. Just sit down on a bench to tune a guitar during the festival, and someone is almost bound to come up and say something to that effect. And maybe, since you are dealing with the media, and the media think in cliches, get some ukeleles along, because that's what spells Blackpool for the BBC. Here is a song I wrote at Fylde Festival (and the tunes in that link) a couple of years ago, walking up from the camp site, and sang it when I got there: Well I went into a public house, and ordered up my beer, And the barman says, I'm sorry mate, you cannot sing in here. A fellow from the council, he came on very strong, Says I haven't got the licence that will let you sing your songs. Sing a song of freedom, sing it while you may, Rules and regulations are taking it away So sing a song of freedom, better sing it very quiet, If anyone joins the chorus, then a licence is required. One of you or two of you, well that could be allowed - But if anyone joined the chorus, well, three would make a crowd. If I let you sing your songs, then I'd be sorry if I did, For that could mean a fine for me of twenty thousand quid. Sing a song of freedom, sing it while you may, Rules and regulations are taking it away So sing a song of freedom, better sing it very quiet, If anyone joins the chorus, then a licence is required. Watching football on the telly can fair make the rafters ring - But if a you want to sing a song, that's quite a different thing. Folk or Jazz or Rock and Roll, any old kind of sound, Reggae, punk, or Mozart, they do not want us round. Sing a song of freedom, sing it while you may, Rules and regulations are taking it away So sing a song of freedom, better sing it very quiet, If anyone joins the chorus, then a licence is required. Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free If you keep your head down, they just might let you be. Land of Hope and Glory - excuse me if I laugh. If you want to sing a song, best sing it in the bath. Sing a song of freedom, sing it while you may, Rules and regulations are taking it away So sing a song of freedom, better sing it very quiet, If anyone joins the chorus, then a licence is required. Sing a song of freedom, sing it while you may, Though their rules and regulations may be standing in the way, Sing a song of freedom, sing it loud and clear, Sing a song of freedom, let them know that you are here. Mind even that song didn't envisage good old New Labour changing two-in-a-bar to none-in-a-bar. |
Subject: RE: PEL - 'Demo' Fleetwood 30th Jan 2003 From: clansfolk Date: 18 Jan 03 - 07:36 PM I may be wrong - but didn't you sing it at John Bonds Sing-a-round at the Mount that Friday? |
Subject: RE: PEL - 'Demo' Fleetwood 30th Jan 2003 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Jan 03 - 08:02 PM That's where I was going when I was shaping it, and that would have been the first time out. It's a longish walk from the campsite, just about right for putting a song together. (I think the tune's shifted a little - started out more or less as Sing a Song of Sixpence, but after a few times out it turned into something closer to Click Go the Shears.) |

If you can support this event which might, in some small way, have an effect on changing the proposed licensing laws and the knock-on effect on music, dance and entertainment - please do so. Subject: RE: PEL - 'Demo' Fleetwood 30th Jan 2003 From: clansfolk Date: 31 Jan 03 - 07:28 AM Thanks to those including Graham Dixon, Alan Bell and local and not so local musicians who managed to get along..... and the local licensing officer who to my mind and most of the others there confirmed we will have a problem if the proposals go through "as is" - he stayed on for 3/4 hr after the programme went out to try and answer questions.... and a good natured debate took place, if only the good doctor could be as reasonable as the enforcement officer was - maybe things could have been resolved without all this fuss! Might have done some good and we managed another 3 or 4 pages of signatures. I'm sure anyone listening to the Nic Dow show "Lancashire Drift" last night would have been as amazed as the rest of us at the lack of knowledge of the proposal by the presenters, totally confusing the PEL and proposed licensing charges with PRS payments, not realising that current pubs clubs that already hold a PEL will automatically get the new license without additional costs - giving a resume of the new laws - although admitting they new nothing much about them - that bore little or less to what is really proposed - I'm not surprised the phone was red hot!!!!!!!! Maybe if they'd listened to the afternoon program they'd have realised it's not a "storm in a teacup" - or maybe we're being unfair and they were playing "Devils Advocate" hands being tied by the radio station?????? we'll see.................. thanks again everyone and also a big thanks to radio Lancashire for allowing us to take over the program - and special thanks to Maria Felix Vas for all her hard work - she's a Luv...... |
Subject: RE: PEL - 'Demo' Fleetwood 30th Jan 2003 From: clansfolk Date: 31 Jan 03 - 07:34 AM Our song for the day..... to the tune of Lancashire Lasses (based on Oh dear what can the matter be) No Singing Aloud Words P Skinner & John Bond Tune Trad. Once we could only sing "Two in a Bar" We thought that restriction was going too far We asked them to change it and so here we are It's none in a bar there will be So we took up Morris dancing, out on the street But now, the government's put on the heat 'Cause if anyone's watching the law we won't meet So it's no Morris dancing for me I went to the pub the Jukebox to hear Bought me a sandwich and had me a beer But I, could not sway to the music I fear 'Cause dancing you can't do for free Can't hear myself think in the pub now you see They're watching the match on the widescreen TV And I think to myself "now how can that be?" That they don't need a licence for that? Get your MP to sign, E D M 331 Before singing and dancing and music is gone And I've just realized that in singing this song A criminal then I will be So plead for me with your M.P. Or no music and dancing there'll be |
