Subject: BS: HOUSTON ASTRODOME CENSOR From: GUEST,CLOGGEER Date: 09 Sep 05 - 05:42 PM UK radio 4 had an interview with a guy (sorry I missed his name), working for the american radio media, who said that "they" refused to allow any broadcasting from the Astrodome (where 2,000 evacuees from New Orleans are) as it may cause riots!! "they" being the owners of the astrodome, the power companies and local government (liscence issues). Is this me or is the land of the free now gagged. What the hell can be going on there, that the information needs to be stamped on? |
Subject: RE: BS: HOUSTON ASTRODOME CENSOR From: Wesley S Date: 09 Sep 05 - 05:49 PM I think I'd like to hear more of a reliable story than this before I get upset about it. Do you have any facts you can share ? Or is it all just rumors so far. |

Subject: RE: BS: HOUSTON ASTRODOME CENSOR From: GUEST,clogger Date: 09 Sep 05 - 06:18 PM The interview was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at aprox 14.30 9-9-5. It was part of a larger programme about the efforts post Hurricane, no opposing viewpoints were expressed... (very unusual for the Beeb) Other Accusations were made, Condition of sleeping ..etc... The crux of the arguement was that when "they" found that anyone was working for the media they woul be escorted out of the stadium. The inerviewee claimed to be a professional working in the radio media, who was attempting to set up a low power radio station in the Stadium to give (amongst other things) information about Jobs and help available. The Beeb has one of the biggest sites going (all this info should be there) |

Subject: RE: BS: HOUSTON ASTRODOME CENSOR From: artbrooks Date: 09 Sep 05 - 06:40 PM Well, I went to the BBC website, and found nothing on this. Then I turned on the TV and watched a live video shot inside the Astrodome. Maybe this guy was kicked out because he wanted to set up an unauthorized radio station? Radio stations, low power or not, have to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission. |
Subject: RE: BS: HOUSTON ASTRODOME CENSOR From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Sep 05 - 07:00 PM I'd rather not have too much in the way of TV broacasting from the room in which I was living with my family, even if I was sharing that room with a lot of other families. There's a real danger of the media imposing on people, using them, even exploiting them. And of course there's the other potential danger of the authorities in a situation like this maybe trying to manage the news by limiting access, perhaps because there is something that might reflect badly on how they are doing their job. The people who ought to be making decisions about this kind of thing shouldn't be the officials or the owners or the authorities - it should be the people who are actually living there and camping out on the floor. They aren't property, or extras, they are autonomous citizens. |
Subject: RE: BS: HOUSTON ASTRODOME CENSOR From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 09 Sep 05 - 08:21 PM I do believe there is (or was) a category of low power transmissions of limited range that are approved, like 'baby monitors' and transmitters that allow you to relay music from one place to another on a portable radio. Having a temporary local radio station transmitting the sort of stuff mentioned - job info, important announcements, etc, would seem to be a good idea for FEMA to do automatically, but just how many of the 'refugees' would have radios (and sufficient batteries)? |
Subject: RE: BS: Houston Astrodome Censor From: Ebbie Date: 09 Sep 05 - 09:41 PM I don't know about the Astrodome but I do know that early on, Brian Williams from NBC Nightly News spent the night and reported from the Superdome. By all accounts, it was an uncomfortable night. |

Subject: RE: BS: Houston Astrodome Censor From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Sep 05 - 04:05 AM I'm a bit dubious about this. According to the programme listings for Friday 9th September, 14.30 would have landed you slap in the middle of the afternoon play. It's more likely World at One.... but I didn't have time to listen to it all.... Scroll down to programme and click. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Houston Astrodome Censor From: GUEST Date: 10 Sep 05 - 05:29 AM Why should broadcasting be permitted from a shelter??????? This is all many have left - ALL! A shelter is now their home and everyone one in there is part of a temporary extended family. And you want to see this too? Good Lord, they have no privacy as it is and you want cameras and lights coming in. What good would this do you to be able to see this? The rule is; no boradcasting from within the shelters. Maybe to satisfy you ongoing curiosity, you will get to see an autopsy of a Grandmother and her 5 yeat old Granddaughter who drowned togehter. Yes, there is an issue and it is called "decency"! |
