Strictly speaking, Julie, you're re-using the thread, rather than recycling it. Recycling would be where you take an existing thread, strip out the contents, and rename it. "Reduce, re-use, recycle", in descending order of environmental friendliness; after that, bury it or burn it, like those people up the road from where you live.

Anyway, well done, environmentally!

Steve

Thought I'd just recycle this thread and use it to say that the pub is open as normal again now, so the session will be on again tonight. They were closed unexpectedly for a few days last week due to a blocked drain.

Sorry. Previous e-mail a bit garbled. Meant to say that we were, of course, already back in the bar LAST night.

... We're back and it's official!!! The Cannon now had a PEL and the tune session was back in the bar next week. Pat Mason is thinking of trying to make next week's session a special celebration 're-opening' one, so come along if you can.

The audience in the bar seemed very happy to have us back too. Next Friday night concert, in the function room at the back, will be on Friday Sept 6th. Not quite sure who is on ... something like 'The Lily and the Rose'? Please excuse my ignorance. I'm told they are very good.

It's thought that a PEL may be obtained for The Cannon in the next week or two, allowing the session to restart in the public bar.

There's a relevant letter on the letters page of this week's (June 13th) Milton Keynes Citizen newspaper.

Good News
Pat Mason say that the session will take place as a private function from tonight (Wed June 5th) in the function room at the back of The Cannon. Only musicians will be allowed in though; no audience members. Spread the word

Bad news.

I just rang The Cannon to check whether the normal Wed. night session would be going ahead as usual. Staff say that no, it won't. All sessions & concerts have been cancelled until further notice.

Please pass the news on to anyone you know who might be planning to attend, to save them a wasted journey.

Spoke to Ken Daniels, landlord at The Fox & Hounds in Stony Stratford last night and his impression is that the MK Council do have a sensible attitude towards sessions. Someone who should have appearing on the support bill at The Cannon said she thought that the landlord is out of the country at the moment, so maybe the PEL lapse was an oversight.

Shambles
The Wed night session consists of approx 10 musicians all playing tunes together.

McGrath
Exact details are sketchy at the moment. I'll post all the details when I get them (probably not before Wed).

Bullfrog
Yes, I was astonished too. Maybe they did have one, but it has lapsed/not been renewed due to oversight?

There's a thread Killed by the PEL system which is acting as a place to gather these kind of specific examples. So if someone could post the details there it'd be helpful

And remember, MPs prefer to respond to specific cases in their constituencies, rather than points of principle and so forth. So this might be an occasion for Milton Keynes people to Fax Your MP.

And if it turns out to be true that the council in Milton Keynes is willing to openly draw a distinction between sessions and concerts, which allows the former to take place regardless of a lack of a PEL, that in itself is very much worth reporting here. It would be something that ought to be brought to the attention of other councils which refuse to make this distinction. (And MPs and ministers who can't seem to understand it.)

The future of the regular Wednesday night session, run by Pat Mason, must now also be in doubt.

I assume the band consist of more than two performers but what form does the Wednesday night session take?

Bad news indeed but I would be surprised if Milton Keynes officers were coming down hard on participatory sessions. I Had had quite a lot of contact with them, a little way back over general PEL matters and had formed the impression that they were at least trying to be reasonable.

Some more info would be helpful.

Bad news -- it's a good and well-established venue (although I'm astonished that it doesn't have a PEL). I was hoping that the MK council were fairly lenient (assuming it comes under MK). This could have repercussions on other sessions in the area.

If anyone in the Milton Keynes area was planning to go The Cannon pub in Newport Pagnell this evening for the gig by local band 'Togmor' then don't. It turns out that the pub doesn't have a PEL and has had a visit from Council Officials. So, tonights concert (Friday March 24th) has been cancelled, as have future concerts. The future of the regular Wednesday night session, run by Pat Mason, must now also be in doubt.
